I find there are times the craving for candy, chocolate, is immense, like last night.
It was late, I had just finished playing music at Angela's in Plano, and I sat to watch the news. I had a bag of Hershey's Kisses at my side, and I ate two at a time for about 10 minutes. I must have had at least 16 or so, and they were fabulous. I ignored the M&Ms, Butterfingers and caramels that were also in the bag. After this lot of candy is gone, I will cut down a lot. I would be lying to myself if I said I was going to cut out candy/sugar.
The good news is that I don't need/crave pop/Coke/DP/Welch's Grape, nearly as much as I used to need it. That's a big step.
Luckily, I'm in my "accountability" mode right now, and all the floor exercises are combating the sugar intake.
It's a battle!
Addendum: Rule: Do not lie to yourself! Make goals, and accomplish them, but do not be too extreme, because man might be setting himself up for failure. Telling myself/promising myself, is tantamount to lying to myself. I won't do it. This may be another separate topic.

If you can, get all the sweets out of the house and don't have easy access to any of it. Tough to do if you have kids or a wife who eats the stuff, but It has really worked for me. I keep a good amount of fruit and nuts for snacks. A lot of time it is just needing to put something in your mouth. If cutting sweets is not a priority for you, you are probably not going to do it. Make self discipline a priority. If not, you are going to fail.

Man my wife is bad about buying candy, and having kids it seems like we always have candy. And now, it's girl scout cookies The worst though is when a family member comes by and brings a box of cookies or something like that. Her aunt came back from Dallas the other day and left a big box of sugar cookies from JD's Chippery. There's only one left. As for sugar drinks, I very rarely drink any, water probably 98% of the time and unsweet tea if the wife orders it for me. The struggle is real.

I'm glad the Halloween Candy is about gone! Good riddance! (Well it's down to stuff I don't want, like Tootsie Rolls, Starburst, ect. If it ain't chocolate, I don't care!

I figure if I have the will power to quit smoking cold turkey, I can quit candy, donuts, deserts and the like. I've quit smoking about 5 times in my life. The last time was back in October. I've quit as long as 5 years and as short as 2 years. Run in to problems drinking with old buddies who still smoke - that's pretty much what has gotten me every time. Anyway, quitting nicotine is tough and I figured quitting sweets couldn't be any tougher. I'm not trying never to eat another sweet, but going to go a minimum of 3 months without. I like the changes in the way I feel so far. The second week I felt a little like I had withdrawal symptoms like headaches and feeling off. That's pretty much gone now.

I consider myself very low on the sugar intake from the start. Very rarely had a soda, did like sweet tea at lunch but most places have gone over board. However when I start working out and watching my food intake I crave sugar like no other. It is weird. I assume I was getting my fix from carbs but not certain. Pretty much a meat eater anyways. It is definitely hard to fight!

Honestly, (I won't lie to myself) I don't want to "cut" sugar from my life. I love the pleasures of sweets way to much to delete them completely. I just want to crave them less often, and be satiated quicker so that I don't keep repeating the action of hands on sweets-open wrapper-put in mouth-chew-swallow-savor momentarily-repeat.
That process is what gets me each time.

I tried cutting sugar and failed. Miserably. I need something sweet every now and then and I have a horrible sweet tooth - especially baked goods. BUT cutting out all soda does work. No sweetened drinks during the week. I have water, I have unsweet tea. I even have my little squeeze bottles of flavor. But no soda and no sweet tea.

I use Splenda in my coffee most of the time and occasionally Turvia. It seems the jury is still out on Splenda. There's just so much BS on the web about all of the artificial sweeteners. I usually drink two cups in the AM and am going to cut back to one pack of sweetener split between the two cups.

I have cut it completely, due to the ol type 2 diagnosis in october. I have a tremendous sweet tooth. Not only have i cut the sweets i am reading labels and have cut sugar from just about everything. Pasta/pizza sauce, ketchup, etc... I have also gone to a very low carb intake, no pasta, rice, taters, white breads. Its tough but doable. I will admit without the incentive of the diabetes i wouldnt be as strong willed.
I consume a lot of Adkins products which are low to no sugar and low carb, but still sweet and it calms my desire for sweets. I eat about 4 large salads a week for dinner, red wine/olive oil dressing only. There are low carb tortillas that taste very much like regular ones and i consume those almost daily stuffed with something.
Ive lost about 10 pounds since october and have lowered my blood sugar readings to near normal. The real benefit has been how i feel which is way better. My head is clearer and im more mentally sharp and i notice my mood is overall more upbeat. I wish i could get rid of the arthritis that happened to me in May doing the same thing lost 33 pounds & off meds what kind of tortillas are they?

I haven't been reading here lately and thought I'd rejoin. 1st of all, getting older is work! Getting wiser in what we consume, takes time and as said above, "Read the labels". It's a must for the health conscious consumer. For the 2nd time in my life, I have damn near been diagnosed as type II diabetes. I beat it the 1st time by a massive diet change and more excerise (dang desk job makes it hard) now 5 years later, facing the same. With that, we are back on track in watching what we eat and out walking more, lots more...5+ miles a day weather permitting really helps. When the sweet tooth hits, we've started buying dark chocolate with %90 cocoa. The sugar per serving is 4 grams per serving (some less) opposed to your typical milk chocolates. It cures the craving and the flavor grows on ya. Butch, check these out. We rarely buy bread and use them for breakfast burritos, any sandwich needs and as roll ups. Anywhoo....best of luck to us all and thanks JP for having a separate page with no BS, for sharing our knowledge with others.
Some folks mouths, flat out runs their minds.
