Wow this is a great post. Im not by any means new to fishing, but I am new to taking my kids fishing. I have two step kids and we just had a baby together. I try taking my 7yr old and 4yr old fishing but,I must admit, I've been guilty of a number of those poinyou. They don't like going anymore. This has been very educational for me, and I hope to put it into practice. Thank you.

Hey Garguy93! Thank you for the comments. You know, you might try incorporating them in helping you sort stuff, you know "getting ready for the spring spawn". As we both know, you are probably already ready, lol but, they don't know that. Bring them into the process and build it up and invite them to come along next time. Might be a good way to get them back around. I wish you the best.
Tight lines.

But here is the big question. How do I get my wife into fishing. I mean I understand that it aint everyone's thing but there has to be a way to make it enjoyable to her.

Garguy93 - Bribery Just kidding but, it was the first thing that came to mind. Honestly, I don't know why these tips only have to apply to kids.

I gave up on my wife in this area. She goes and hangs out in the boat but hardly ever fishes. I didn't even pick her a license up last year or this year so far. She will usually assist the kids fishing, get some sun or read a book.

My daughter has been fishing with me sine she was 4. We have fished all over the state together fishing for stripers. Over the years what this is what I learned. 1) Make it fun first and foremost 2) In the beginning fish for something easy... bream, whites...its important to catch something 3) Be patient ... Kids will be kids 4) Give them a job of some sort. This makes them feel important and needed 5) Initially Keep it short...and when they want to leave, leave 6) in summer if they want to swim let them swim for a little bit 7) go exploring looking for cool stuff or catch bugs or something 8) Bring plenty of snacks and drinks...hungry thirsty kids are no fun Bottom line make it all about them. She is now 12 and when were at the ranch she will grab her pole and walked down to the tank by camp house and go to fishing. All on her own and sometimes she ask me to come along. Pretty cool if you ask me.

That's pretty cool. I took my four year old fishing in a small neighborhood pond close to the house and he loved it. I didn't even bring my pole, just his. Caught some small bluegill in a matter of minutes and then he wanted to go home, so we did. On the way home he says to me, "lets go again tomorrow." well worth leaving my rod at the house.

Thats awesome. Everytime you go try to stay a little longer.
