Has anybody used any other video cameras on the boat besides go pro?
Preferably with a view finder.

Sure have Tom...

I've been using this little handheld sony camcorder on a tripod for years now. It's been perfect but I need to upgrade to a new one soon. I also started using my iphone 6 plus a lot this year, but have put it thru heck on the boat from doing so. Dropped it in the livewell twice and cracked the screen while it was in my pocket when I leaned against a box anchor. I had to get a new phone last week. As for the gopros, I have always stayed away from them because they stank when they first come out with no viewfinder. Some of the gopros can now be equipped with a viewfinder though and they look pretty neat but I'm going to just stay with a handheld sony. I think a small handheld is exactly what you would need and you would be just fine. As for video editing programs they go from about 60.00 to as high as you can imagine, but most computers nowadays ( and phones ) come with a decent free video editing software program available that are usually pretty simple to use but some can still be a real pain. When it comes down to it, it's just something else you can spend hours and hours of money and time messing with especially if you want true quality footage, but if you ever decide you want to try to make some good videos though let me know. I'm game to help ya. cheers

P.s. I have also learned a lot from watching my own videos at times and just because I have a camera on hand, it doesn't always mean I get all the good footage, but I think the most important thing is just having one handy just in case. Even if you don't get the full fish fight on record or any at all, whatever you can get is always a bonus when all the shad, scales and slime is warshed off... flag fish

I have several GoPro cameras. You don't really need a viewfinder because they are a wide angle action camera. Just point it in the general direction and you'll capture your subject.

That being said, the viewfinder add-on was available even for the first generation of HD GoPro cameras. Some of the newer ones have a touchscreen viewfinder available but the older model will still work.

Fishin' to stock Lake Crisco.

I got an SJ4000 or some clone of that action cam and it's pretty good for the price. Compatible replacement batteries and chargers are cheap. I want to upgrade but hard to justify because between it and my canon elph100 I can get decent video.
If you are bored you can check out my recent videos on youtube, where the first person stuff is the sj4000.

I'll share the stuff I am tempted to get at different price ranges.

If I only had 40 bucks to spend I'd get this off of Amazon prime.

If I had 60 dollars I'd get this on Amazon.

If I had 80 dollars I'd get this on Amazon.

If I had 110 dollars then this:

Each $ increment gets you a little bit better sensor and features more or less. I've stared at example videos for all of these on youtube. If my budget was in the 200 dollar range I'd go with a used or new gopro I guess.

The wide angled cameras have their drawbacks. If you have good phone camera perhaps no need for it but I'm also tempted to grab one of these nikons. If you are even just a little serious about video best to have both action cam and regular camera because anything more than 10 feet away seems like a 100 on the action cams.
