I have an old Marlin 22 mag that is a tack driver. It's got a cheap scope on it that has to be reset every time I shoot it. I've never shot it much and didn't really care. My son is getting old enough to shoot and I want to put a decent scope on it. I want something that goes to at least 12 magnification and 40mm size. Budget is about $300 but would like to spend less(it's a $100 gun ) . What say the TFF?

Save your money a little while longer to get that budget up to get a nice Leopold that you don't have to worry about p.o.i. changing on...the gun may be not expensive but it is a good brand that you will never shoot the barrel out of, so as long as you don't run it over with the truck or let it fall to rust it will be in your family for many generations...don't skimp on the scope...

Vortex is probably the best bang for your buck out there. They are releasing a number of new products this year that have really changed the optics market for good. I have same gun and put a Redhead 3x9 32mm on it. No need for much more on a 22 mag and certainly do not need a 12x. I have had the Redhead on for several years with no problems. You are not going to be shooting over 100 yards with that gun. If you want a decent scope go with a Leoupold vx1 or a Burris.

Bought 2 Vortex this year at Driving Nails Gun shop between Azle and Springtown and absolutely a great scope with full replacement lifetime warranty. Give Vortex and Driving Nails shot, I am glad I did

Check this THF thread out. Guy is looking for a decent hunting scope for $300 or less and there are lots of good recommendations. In that price range, my first pick would be the Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14, for $299. If you want to spend less, the Minox 4.5-14x44 for $159 should be excellent glass.

I'd say a Nikon Prostaff. They have tons of options and I've bought several refurbs from Natchez and never had an issue! Somewhere around $160-180 and they are plenty bright and have a great field of view.

I would check all the mounting hardware to make sure its tight.

Also are you shooting the same kind/lot of ammo every time you shoot and its moving or mixing different brands and lots?

If your going to different kinds of ammo its probably not a scope problem. You should try to buy the same kind and expect it might move when you switch to a new box.

If the scope is the culprit I would go to warlmart academy etc and find the best looking scope under $50 you can find and go with it. That's what I have done with my 22 scopes and ive never had a problem for any of them. I just cant see putting a leupold on a cheap 22.

I don't know about warranties for other brands but Vortex takes care of their customers. I did a pretty good one and messed one up, 100% my fault, told them what'd happened and they replaced it no questions asked.

For a 22 mag. Get the 3x9 Nikon at Walmart. About $129. Good scope
