About half of the cats I have caught and kept this winter were full of eggs. Do the female hold eggs year round or are those sacks of yellow not eggs?

They can spawn more than once a year.

I wasn't sure. All the sites I have read says they only spawn in late spring to early summer in waves by water temperature. I haven't found anything about multiple spawns per year.

I've seen spawning catfish in warm water creeks months early full of eggs and ready to go.

one way to tell if they are spawning is when you start catching carp in shallow water after the winter when they go shallow. Carp are there eating the eggs

Lots of things come into play with spawning blue cat, water temperature, health of the fish, and other factors. I've been told by TPWD biologist that if the wrong things present themselves the female will abort the spawn and in time her body will reabsorb the eggs. Some warm waterlakes like Fairfield that stay warmer year around may play tricks on the reproduction of catfish.

I know here in Central Texas this winter has been crazy. One week we are below freezing for a day or two, then in a few days back into the 70's. We've had 2 real hard freezes that the temperature got into the teen's. The lake temperature is going up and down. It's got to be messing with the fish here.

Not uncommon to catch catfish with eggs year round.

Great thanks for the info. I have always thought the more I can learn about the fish, the more successful I will be in catching them.

Nope, because the photoperiod (length of day) is not right. That has to happen first.
