I like April and May for rod and reel.

I like to get after them from late Feb through mid-April on Conroe. That is when the spawn is on and they are always cooperative along the shorelines. Live bream bait is best from 3 to 7 inches and works fine on a No. 7 hook. You should 20# minimum test line as these bigger ones can spool you quickly. As always, look for structure. They like easy bait and hang around boat ramps regularly where bream tend to always congregate. All my flats come from just one private boat ramp which never leaves me skunked.

I've seen a lot of big flat heads caught when the crappie are spawning. They seem to be in the shallows with them. After May, we start fishing for them at night through the summer months. We use live perch for them. Not to say you can't catch them in the winter months, just look for deep water with big logs or concrete/rocks caves. They seem to like to hide where the water is warmer and deep. With todays electronics, it makes locating them easier in the winter months.

I would think now till around May is the best. Like all the rest, use live bait and hit the right looking spots.

I caught some nice ones in lake Fork last March, in a little cove with a boat ramp and several private docks and peirs. Caught them on limb lines on dead tree branches.

Seems like they shut down when the water drops to 50 degrees or below. Besides that you should be able to catch them.
