depends where you're fishing. power plant lake where the water temps are in the 70s-80s i would choose a jig. cold water lakes I would choose a jig with water temps 45 degrees or higher and a jerkbait below 45 degrees.

It's pointless to pick between the two on a poll. It all depends on where you are and what's going on with conditions at the time.

Maybe you can add a clam to your poll and try that.

Big....HONKING....JIG!
Jerk baits have a place and a time....but a Jig is day in day out ALWAYS GREAT.
Of course, a monkey could catch a bass on a jerkbait when they are suspended and eating cold, dying Shad. But, I'd still rather hop a jig.
Eat. Sleep. Fish.

Alright, "generally" speaking for a cold water lake in the northern part of Texas from lake Conroe to Meredith.

If the bass are suspending/in the middle of the water column--I'd have more confidence in a jerkbait
On the bottom or tight to cover or reacting to something falling fast, jig
There might be days when both work equally well.

All depends on lake and conditions of the day. Certain lakes I'll throw a jerkbait all day long other lakes they won't touch one and I can get bit on a jig better. My favorite is the jerkbait. Just my observations and opinion.

There might be days when both work equally well. I am not all that great with a jerkbait but was under the impression that a jerkbait, if worked right would bring the fish up from the bottom? I'm asking not telling.

It all depends on what the fish want so try both of them and find out for yourself which is best that day.

A Jerkbait will out fish a jig all day long in cold water and I'm referring to 50 deg less, a bass main food source in cold water is the shad die offs not crawfish.

two totally different methods , both have a place and time . Rip baits are lots of fun , but I never seem to catch the really big ones , lots of smaller to mid sized bass . For jigs , clearly a better way to have a better than average chance at a big bass . As for water temps , in most states in the US , crawdads start the mating ritual , usually in rocky area's , when temps starting getting 50F plus ( not 50F at the surface , 50F at the crawdads level ) . Jigs in a brighter colors , cranks in red colors and even NED rigs all replicate the crawdad early season behavior . Early spring is great for both techniques .

Neither are my go-to lures for winter but between the 2 I would throw a jerkbait if the water clarity was good and a jig if it wasn't.
My go-to technique in the winter is to slow roll a big spinnerbait.

Paraphrasing BUBBA in Forest Gump- "You can swim a jig, punch a jig, drag a jig, hop a jig, pitch a jig, flip a jig, cast a jig, and I guess that is about all"

A Jig everytime... I throw what I have confidence in
