That's about average. Rule is the larger the dog the shorter the life.

We love our mini-aussies. I wouldn't want a dog around kids that would bite someone once in awhile. I'd rather a dog that barks at strangers to alert me an I make the decision to do something.

German Police dog , hands down. Note : German Police not German Shepard. A police is much bigger and has long hair. Have had two of them , and they are the most loyal dogs one can have. There are 2 different types and make sure you check out their blood line. One is breed to be a show dog , the other is a guard dog. Mine has both parents from Germany , and are guard dogs. Get the very young also. They are super smart and you can train the with ease. I can not walk or go anywhere without him leading the way. I also trained mine in German so only I and the wife can tell him what to do. he will not leave our front porch when at the lake house while we are inside and wonder off like other dogs will.

I have a Weimaraner and a catahola/black mouth cur mix. The Weimaraner is very protective does not wonder off unless to chase a squirrel for a short amount of time. Catahola mix will get out and get going any chance she gets. She is not very protective like our Weimaraner. I would say our Weimaraner is very attached to us and does not ever want to leave, while the catahola is very happy with us but would rather run off and chase/kill stuff.

And I have had him around our grandkids since they were baby's , and he has never as much as growled at them. I feel sorry for anyone who tries to harm them when he is around ! He loves to play with them.

I lucked out and found mine on Craigs List after my other one had to be put down after he got hit by a semi . Just make sure he has a good blood line from Germany.

Well, we have had 2 of our friends house broke into in the last 2 years. They both live within a mile or 2 of our place

We live out in the country.

So with the kids staying at home I definitely want a dog who will protect the kids and place but not a pit bull
