Launch ramp is great! Best one on Caddo. I have not camped at the park but have launched there a bunch. Idle out to the river, take a right and head to Caddo lake. Turn left and you can run all the way to Jefferson. Get a map and stay in the boat lanes. It can be very confusing to run. Stop for a burger at Shady Glade Resort. When out of the boat lanes, idle! Lots of stumps.

Coolest lake in the state of Texas!

March you will want to fish Ames springs, turtle shell, old folks playground, and goose prairie.

Make sure you go to the Riverbend Restaurant. The "freebie" corn bread, beans, and fried green tomatoes alone are enough to fill you up.

Be safe,

Riverbend is good but we really like Big Pines Lodge for some really good fried catfish or a burger. Both are right on Big Cypress Bayou as you head downstream towards the lake from the state park. Just tie up & go eat! Denver, Caddo is one of a kind. The senery alone is worth the trip. Run from the State Park down river-up government ditch and over to Uncertain Texas. That's where we always stay. Shady Glade in Uncertain.

I've fished there recently. 1972. They were smoking a Crazy Shad at daybreak. Sorry. Old info but true. A Texas treasure. So take that all in no matter the fishing results. Good Luck.

I hate to be the buzzkill, but unless we get a couple of months of torrential rain to wash out the salvinia, most of the lake will be unfishable by March. Ames Spring, The Hill, Little Green, and most of the Texas side except for Big Cypress are already unfishable. I was there last week, I launched at Potters Point, and could only run about 50 yards at a time on boat road C before I would have to shut down to go around the salvinia mats, they were too thick to run through. The only open water between little green break and Ames Sping Basin are the boat roads themselves. The rest of the lake looks like pasture land. The salvinia mats have green grass growing on top.

You should still be ok up Big Cypress, but the big lake cypress tree fishing is over for now. It's a shame.

hoodat92 is right. I was there between xmas and NYE and it was bad. Main lake outside of Potters looks like a pasture. You can fish in and around the river/bayou and I saw a lot of guys catching crappie. Need a big flood to wash some of this [censored] out. The stuff moves around a lot and areas you can and can't get through seem to change by the hour.

Definitely eat at Shady Glade. It is the best of the restaurants on the lake IMO.

This is a reminder that if you do come be sure not to transport this [censored] to other lakes on your trailer.

Big Cypress Bayou was fine a couple months ago as were most main lake boat lane but yes the upper lake Texas side was thick with that stuff. Fish the river!

My favorite lake in Texas, haven't been in awhile though. Used to camp at the state park every summer and fish. Like others have said, Riverbend and Big Pines to eat. Boat Ramp at state park is awesome. Take a camera and soak it in, I have great memories from that place! Fish are a bonus.

Texascajun,

As of last week there were live and dead salvinia mixed together in the mats. They have been spraying hard since late summer/early fall and have "killed" a lot of it, but it is still floating in huge mats. So, even if the cold snap "kills" it, what's already there is going to come back with a vengeance once it warms back up this spring.

On a side note, I personally don't believe the cold actually "kills" the stuff. Yes, it turns brown and sinks to the bottom, but...two springs ago I was fishing on a warm day after several warm days in a row. I noticed an inordinate amount of bubbles around an island I was fishing, like the bubbles a submerged turtle or small gator would make. So, I kept watching and all of the sudden a "pod" of bright green salvinia popped up to the surface where the bubbles were. I noticed this several more times that day. So....that led me to the conclusion that the stuff really doesn't die, but rather becomes dormant and regrows like perennial grass. I have nothing scientific to base this on other than my personal experience and conclusion. I hope I'm not right, but I don't have another explanation for what I saw.

A friend of mine lives down there on Lake Bisteneau. He took a bunch of it out of the lake from around his boat ramp. He piled it up on the bank. This was in Sept. In March he was fixing his garden and thought it would make good compost for the garden. He spread it all over his garden and watered it. After sitting for 6 months on land during a cold winter it came back to life. He then dug a big hole and buried it and it still grew. A burn pile on top of it finally killed it. It's like a zombie.
