I am not a Rayburn "expert" by no means, but I do spend between 15-20 days a year up there and have done so for almost 40 years now. I have 2 double digits to my credit (an 11.4 in 96 and a 10.8 in 04) along with dozens of fish in the 8+ or better category. I say this not to brag, but to make a point. More than half of those fish came on days when I was catching those 12-16 inch bass by the dozens. It has happened to me twice as well during the Sealy event with a "MONEY" fish. It does not always happen that way, but there is a lesson here. Don't let the small fish scare ya away. Be patient and you may be rewarded with the fish of a lifetime.

Everything on your bass boat is broken......You just don't know it yet.

I always read anything on Rayburn because I live on the lake and fish it. I will grab my rod and walk down to the bank and fish. I have seen some big bass in certain areas consistently. But I just love to fish. It goes to show what a fantastic fishery Rayburn is. I too just like to catch fish, a school of dinks is a lot of fun. Of course coming from New MExico what you guys call dinks are trophies in NM.

technical would be that school of 5 to 7 pounders that get on a spot In 4 foot of water the size of a bass boat front deck. That only eat for 30 minutes out of the day and need current and the lake to be rising. Or that spot out in 20' that's the size of a outboard motor that with the right angle you can catch twenty 5 pounders. Of course electronics are involved. You gotta have as much info as possible. You also have to be able to adjust. I think adjusting is one of the most important thing you can do in bass fishing. Unless you just like catching fish then you can just keep sticking small fish. Whatever makes you guys happy I just think your missing out if you don't adjust and refine a pattern. I've had days on Palestine and Sam Rayburn When I lost count of how many 5 plus pound fish I've caught. It's a freaking blast. I've also had days were I have made the same cast for hours knowing they were gonna turn on sooner or later. Sometimes they do and I load the boat and sometimes they don't and I make mistakes I never know I did. I never really reminis on those times I catch twenty 3 pounders. But I can remember every detail of the days I caught two 7+ on back to back casts followed by a couple 5 pounders all in ten minutes. Anyways that's my two cents and it's probably not worth much more than that.

Dang LG. I was actually really enjoying this troll. It was one of your better ones. Kind of disappointed you didn't continue.

Toadrustler makes a very good point. It's not that there's anything inherently wrong with catching small fish all day long. If it's catch and release anyway, why should size matter?

Short answer...it doesn't. BUT!!! When you strive to improve, it not only helps you that day on the water, but many more to come.

What he stopped short of saying is that you were "ON A PATTERN" in terms of what the fish wanted, and a simple change of locations might have put you into larger fish. (Maybe not). (Sometimes certain actions are simply tailored to smaller fish.)

As mentioned though, ALWAYS, when fishing, paying attention, constantly analyzing, and adapting to what the fish are wanting is the key to being truly successful. I don't buy for a minute ANYBODY prefers to catch smaller fish.

I'm not saying that doesn't make for a great day on the water, but once you get into that 3-7lb. range, that's an awesome day on the water, tournament or not.

Thanks for your confirmation. I was fishing a tournament. The area I was fishing has produced some 3,4 and 5 pounders in December. I could have spent the day running 60 mph however I have hard time feeling a bite at 60 mph. I was hoping as day progressed big bite would move in. I did try two areas close by that had produced as well on traps but Sunday it didn't happen. Thanks again tight lines.

No need for apologies, as a follow up from original post. I did move two areas where the trap bite has been active spending two hours however 0 fish. the area fished produced 3,4,and 5's in December and January. I am not a big fan of running the lake during a tournament. I become indecisive and waste time not having a hook in the water. So I develop a fishing plan and stick with it. This keeps me focused and ensures I am fishing and not boating. I would trade all those fish for a double digit bass however Sunday did not happen. I appreciate your post tight lines.
