Medium for me. I'll fish down to 6lb flouro on it with no issues. Drag is key

set your drag down tight and learn to "back" reel, once you get the hang of it is way way mo better than relying on reel drag

Now, back reeling is a very athletic skill set! For anyone new to spinning reels, Scoundrel is speaking of the ability of many of them to be "switched" so that the crank handle operates both ways: reeling in and letting out line manually.

Some people swear by it and it is sort of analogous to a stick shift (where the user is more involved) versus an automatic transmission on a car.

On the better modern reels, many drags are so buttery smooth and easily adjustable that back reeling has become less used.

I think this year, Shimano removed the option from one of its reels I was shopping for.

Practice first; you don't want to experiment with back reeling with an 8 lbs. bass tugging on the other end.

Brad

Correct Brad, no switch on many new Shimano's, FK, NASCI IIRC, also the Ultegra
