don't know about the other outfitters but if you go wth ron speed, you carry your own reels and they have huge free selection of good rods to choose from....eliminates the hassle of flying rods.....

Well, PVC tubing works real well, but, have you checked with your airline how much it costs to fly that big piece of tubing? Are you hiring a guide service? I'd ask them if they have loaner rods.
Just my $.02

I know a plenty of yall guys have been and taken your own stuff, any product yall would or wouldn't use again??
ps flying the tubing is like $80 bucks... already planned for that, just wanting to buy the tubing that will work best lol

I went last month and there were restrictions on checking more than one bag due to a Mexico "embargo". Please check with airline. We used the Bazooka rod carrier and brought rods to 7' 6".

Someone told me that if you carry on reels they need to be unspooled is that correct?

Carry on your reels. Spooled is OK going down. May have to remove line coming back.

See i've heard about the spooling thing a couple times. The guys who have been going down there have said they have never had to unspool anything. But think i will buy a bulk spool and put it in my checked stuff just in case

I hid all my reels in the zipped liner of my wheeled suitcase, and packed clothing on top of them. That way, if they opened the bag they would see clothes first. All reels were spooled and covered in reel protectors. No issues at all down and back. Made my own rod tube and used pvc expandable plugs at the top end, which made for easy on/off. Even took a spare just in case. just make sure to wrap your rods (rodsocks work fine), get you some velcro strips to keep them bundled together, and some bubble wrap for the tips in case they are handled rough by baggage people. Used this method twice, and so far no damage. Originally was told 7' rods and under, but this last trip I took my powertackles with me and a few were 7'6".

Chad, I assume you checked your bag with the reels in it, or did you carry on?

Have been down 3 times and always went from US to Mex. with reels in carry-on already spooled. For return in order to have the possibility of having to remove line from them in the airport and also because they've seen 4 1/2 days of combat dawn to dark fishing I take the line off. Bazooka case for rods and get a fellow fisherman to put his in too, and split the extra baggage fee. If you go business class or 1st class they will be free.
