Depends on the truck and depends on the weight of the load. With my f-150 I tow a 22' center console (about 5000 lbs) and a utv on a tandem trailer, I always put in drive and go, never needed OD, but again it depends on if it's hilly, flat, size of the motor, etc.

I tow out of overdrive if I'm pulling my boat or a larger load.

What are you driving and towing?

Most half tons are geared with a final drive ratio that keeps rpms low for fuel economy so you will need to drop a gear or maybe two depending on what your towing.

If its a 3/4 ton diesel hitch and go. If your a gauge watcher and have a fair mechanical understanding id say you can observe how the vehicle handles it and make the call from there.

I tow a 19' boat with Chevy 1/2 ton 5.3 engine in tow haul mode all the time.

Depends on the load for me. My 22' CC boat, no, hit the T/H and hammer down. If I'm hauling cattle or a load of hay, or my bigger tractors, I lock out 6th, hit T/H and go. Just try it and if it does not hunt gears up and down all the time, leave it in OD. Older 4 speed Fords need to be locked out. The planetary gears for OD are small, and don't get enough lube oil to cool them under a load. When the burn up, the gears look like little mini apple cores. I rebuild many of them when I worked in my dads shop.

I don't use Tow/Haul for anything, even towing a 8500lb travel trailer. My 6.2L F250 winds up tighter than Dick's hat band shifting gears already. All I notice is a downshift to 5th when starting up a hill. All T/H does is raise the shift points of the tranny, and as long as your transmission isn't constantly hunting, you really don't need O/D.

I guess running with out over drive and holding the rpms around 2700 , cruising at 60 mph is ok. Looked at my manuel and nothing was really mentioned about towing with over drive . I have a 1999 250 4x4 auto , has a lift with larger tires , pulling my rv fully loaded tranny was searching going up and down on long hills . RV listed loaded at 7700 lbs and truck was loaded also . Just trying to get some comparison . Pulling my Skeeter no problem pulling in overdrive . Thanks for any comments or suggestions .

I'll lock out 6th gear when pulling a heavy load unless I hit a long stretch of flat road. I look at it like this....a new transmission has X number of shifts in it and nobody knows what that numbers is. As long as you're not lugging the engine then keep the number of shifts to a minimum to keep from finding that last shift.

Yes, you are fine to tow in overdrive in a 3/4 ton unless it is a max rating tow. Could have saved everyone some time and mentioned it was a 3/4 ton.

BINGO!

Trucks now days are smart enough to know what to do. Besides, I don't keep a truck after warranty expires so I don't care

Tow/Haul increases the shift points to avoid slippage between the gears, which reduces excess transmission wear. As others have said, put it in tow/haul and go for it.
