With a 250 7.3 diesel I would tow in OD.

I doubt the truck has tow haul but if it does I would only use it with large things.

Tow haul increases shift points as well as line pressure. If you haven't try this. Tow your trailer with cruise control set and no tow haul and watch the tach when it down shifts and then try with tow haul and watch. Without tow haul you will likely see the tach jump up high and then settle back to a lower rpm, that is called flare and is caused by slippage which is bad.

I pull in OD as long as the transmission temperature stays below 175. If it starts to go higher I put it in TOW.

My trans temp ran over 175 this morning on the way in to work empty at 30 degrees. Not all transmissions are created equal. Empty normal temp is 190's for mine per the manufacturer I'm not to worry till its well into the 200's, ive never seen above 201 towing in the heat of summer though.

That 4R100 in your 99 would be one I would not tow over 4-5k in OD. Granted it is better than its predecessor, the E4OD, it is still less than desirable. When the ranchers would bring theirs into our shop with OD out, I would drill the lube passage for the OD gear set out to allow more flow of oil and also I raised the clutch pressure. Doing that helped a lot to extend the life of those.

Had a '96 7.3 with 4 speed auto. Had it tuned and a shift kit put in it. Thing was a towing machine, got rid of it with 240K miles on it and it was still running great.

I don't know how big of a load you put on it, but 4 days a week making sale barns with a 32' cattle trailer would tax their azz and ruin them. Bass boats, probably never a problem.

All modern transmissions have a strategy to protect itself in the computer. It will not shift to overdrive unless it meets certain criteria (load, rpm,100 other varibles). Pushing the "tow" button changes the shift schedule in the computer and it will engage other clutches in the transmission to help stop or gear down or 1000 other situations.

Yep. Haven't pulled anything that would cause the truck to shift in and out of OD.

I tow in OD quite a bit, and always have when I can get away with it. The main thing is to watch the rpm's, and not allow the converter to stay unlocked any more than necessary. This requires one to pay attention to the tow vehicle and not just gouge and go. When the converter unlocks and the rpm's rise a few hundred, it generates massive amounts of heat in a short time which is what cooks transmissions. Keep the converter locked, or run it in drive (1:1 ratio). If you don't know how to tell when your converter is locked or unlocked just turn OD off, your transmission will thank you.
