First time I have ever asked for advice/help on a lake, so don't be too hard on my please . Headed there for the first time ever with a buddy, literally know nothing about the lake other than what I have been able to read online. Any advice would be helpful if you are willing. Of course I am not asking for anyone's honey hole, just an idea of how to run the lake, what typically works, and maybe areas to concentrate on. Thanks in advance for anything that you are able to offer.

Depending where you put in there are a few spots to be careful of. I am using Temple park as the put in spot. If you are heading north up the lake there is a small Island on the left side when you get to the fist turn that heads west. I usually keep far right on the east side of the lake and you should be ok. Another spot is the western part of the lake across from Cedar Ridge park. I know Navionics shows min 7-8 feet but i went through there the other day and a 3ft depth popped up on my chart and spooked me pretty good. Again on this one stay right and you will be ok. The only other place will be past the 36 Bridge. I dont mess around too much up that way past stampede creek. Even in there i usually putt through it. The main part of the lake is pretty good and deep. Others may have more to add but those are the spots that stick out most to me.
also.... pm sent
good luck!!

I have mapped the lake for a customer. I have saved two spots other then the 20 spots that I gave the customer. If you would like them plus the write-up on how to fish them, just shoot me a PM.
Thanks, Donald

If you're looking to have a good time fishing near the temple area and aren't going there for a tournament I would just drive the ten extra miles to Stillhouse. It's by far a better lake and you catch fish bigger than dinks there.

As far a fishing quality goes last few years stillhouse has been trending up belton trending down, for whatever reason belton seems to get hammered worse, not sure why, proximity to Ft. Hood maybe.

Maybe the size of belton makes it more attractive and seems like there is more opportunity? I can say during the warmer months belton lake can get crazy busy with both bass and recreational boats.
My reason for belton is my boat storage is literally 1/2 mile from the ramp. Maybe I'll give stillhouse a shot in the next week or two.

Belton can be VERY Stingy at any time of year. I have had days where I have caught 50-75 fish with many over 3-4 lbs and I have had days that dynamite would not have produced! You just have to fish it to understand it. This time of year a crankbait/squarebill over gravel flats (Temple Lake Park has a good one on the north side) next to deep water, but another problem that you have to contend with on Belton is the Zebra muscles. They will attach themselves and cut your line with ease so braid is a must in some areas. If the Zebras are present, it is near impossible to fish a crankbait on the bottom. Try a dropshot next to timber, jig over big rock next to deep water (the lake is full of points with big rock). In the winter I have had better luck staying closer to the main lake area. If it has rained within a few days the Leon River area will get really muddy in some areas.

Heavy fluorocarbon and check for nicks around zebra mussels, not sure about 65lb braid but they cut lighter braid like a knife through butter. I've heard iron silk mono can be a good choice around mussels but haven't used it yet.
