Here you go: http://fishing.about.com/od/bassfishing/a/bass_species.htm8 species and several subspecies within some of the species. Actually, LMB are sunfish. It is very difficult to distinguish between Florida strain and the Northern (native) strain of LMB. They also readily cross yielding a "hybrid" that really isn't a true hybrid but often has the best characteristics of both, i.e. very aggressive (like the Northern) and grows to large sizes (like the Florida). In Texas I've only seen 3... the LMB species, spotted bass, and guadelupe bass and have caught Florida, Native, Hybrid, and Kentucky bass subspecies.

Lacepede in 1802 named the largemouth bass and did so as it resembled a salmon like fish. All of the largemouth (black) bass, genus ( Micropterus) fall within the Sunfish family ( Centrarchidae) which includes the sunfishes, black bass, and crappie. http://www.fishbase.org/identification/SpeciesList.php?famcode=302&areacodeI've collected many, but not all of the species in the family.

There are also smallmouth bass in Texas although they flourish much better in the waters farther north. They are nicknamed bronzebacks for their brownish color - much distinct from its bucket mouth green buddy.
It was a different world when we were boys and girls....
