I'm wanting to drop some money into a solid crappie rig. I've got about $200 to spend and would greatly appreciate any help in deciding how to spend my money. I'm sure others have asked similar questions before, but I was not able to find those threads. If you are reading this and you know of a similar post then please post a link!
Links to specific rods and reels and types of line are greatly appreciated. Right now I crappie fish with 5 foot ultra light rods and 4 lb mono. I get so many hits that I fail to set and I want to change that. I fish out of a Kayak.

For a yak, I like a 6-7' ML rod. Proangler's 6.5' is perfect for yaks because the handle is shorter so it doesn't hit your forearm. Pretty tough to beat that value also at $50. That would be my rod. Might as well get ya an 8 footer from them too for vertical jigging. For the reel, Pflueger President 6930. $60. Excellent value again. If on the lake, I use 15 pound power pro yellow with a flourocarbon leader...just in case a yella cat grabs your jig! Both rods, the reel, and the line for less than $200. And you should have some change for a few baits! There are a few active threads with this exact question right now if you scroll down a bit...bunch of seasoned slab anglers giving great advice. Again, these are my picks out of a kayak specifically...for boat or bank fishing when you can stand, they would change but only slightly.
"Ahhh, yes yes...who has time? Then again, if we never take time, then how can we ever have time?"

I was gonna repeat about what naggler said. I fish out of a kayak as well. The 8' is a bit awkward. I favor suffix 832 over power pro. What's your style of fishing in the kayak? Submerged brush, bridge pillars?

For a kayak, I'd like an even stiffer rod. 7' medium light to medium with a fast tip. Sitting in a kayak, you're motion is somewhat limited and its easy to get a little handcuffed, trying to fish and control the kayaks motion. I want a rod that takes up any slack quick (7') and that sets the hook quickly with minimal rod give (medium). This keeps the battle low to the water and keeps you more in control of the fish. I have never fished from a kayak, but fished for smallmouth from a canoe many times and I have to think its very similar.

I fish from a kayak from time to time and agree with everything said so far. For slips I prefer a 6' rod and that's been covered in the previous posts.Good luck!
I would rather die finding out there was no God than die finding out there is.

I would get 2 of the GSO8M Green 8 Foot Rods from ACCCrappieStix.com. $55.99 Each. I would get a couple of $25-$35 bait caster reels from Wal Mart. Shakespere or any other $25-$35 Reel maker. I would get some 20 pound Power Pro Super Slick Braid in High Vis Green. I would get some 8 pound Flurocarbon called Vanish for my leader line. Some Jig Heads by Squeaky, Redgun, or Nekid Tackle. Plastics from Crazy Angler, Constant Pursuit Outfitters, Thermocline Lures, or Bonehead. If I was fishing feathers I would get some feather jigs from Pepop or Jiggin Jerry. I would commence to Thump Chasing and Slab Slinging. That is what I would do personally. If you have any questions feel free to shoot me a PM or give me a call. Put the line on your index finger (assuming you are using spinning reel) -- you'll stop missing those bites. In muddy water use braid. In deep clear water no rod is going to help you -- line stretch is an issue, try finding line with as little stretch as possible. Spend $200 on beer.

Man...there are a LOT of ways to use that money...Every one has put forth some good suggestions, I would check out tacklewarehouse since they are having some good sales on spinning rods and reels...but as for line, fluro or braid will have less stretch in them...I like to line my spool with some Braid and then attach a fluro leader...helps with stretch and also making that line low viz to the fish.
With Fishing for crappie, usually light rod with light line does the trick, but it can also be specific to the type of fishing you are doing...vertical jigging, fishing brush piles, deep structure, bridge pilings, etc...in the end, do what you feel comfortable with. Go to a store and try out different rod lengths and actions to see what fits best, then you can go online and find the deal. As for a reel...a simple spinning reel will get the job done.

For a reel, I would go with a Pflueger President (Academy) For a rod, I would go with either the 6ft or 7ft G Rod ( www.g-rods.com) -these are not cheap rods, but they are the best on the market. --for a budget choice, go with Pro Angler For your line, I suggest 6-8lb Wally Marshall Hi-Vis Chartreuse (Academy and Walmart) If you want to save some money on jigs, PM me your address and I'll get you a sample pack.
