Want to find out what damage it does to small state stocked bass when you catch them. The State stocked an enormous amount ( hundreds of thousands) of small five to ten inch black bass in Lake Champion near Colorado City. My wife, son, and I had been catching them on zoom finesse worms with regular size Bassin hooks. We were having fun catching sometimes a hundred a day. All were released unharmed or that's what we thought. Over the holidays my son told me he was told that by what we were doing would probably kill those fish due to mouths being torn up. My question is so when we release bass club fish from a tournament back and they have hook holes in their lips, do they heal back? If so then how were we hurting the smaller bass in the lake? The guy that told my son this borders on a protect the animals side of every thing anyhow, so I kind of wonder if he knew what he was talking about.
Even during normal fishing in tournaments I've always culled up and let the smaller fish swim away. They didn't appear hurt, as my live wells have recirculating switches on floats n we always used the blue fish release powder and never had a dead fish at weigh in. The small fish that were stocked were never put in live wells just unhooked and dropped back in water.

Your fine.

Seriously people, when a bass eats a blugill/catfish, do you not think the fish gets finned in the process..

What you got was some guy giving you a scare tactic so you don't hurt his "seakittens"

Ignore him and enjoy your fishing.

I guarantee, more fish are taken by nature, than what you have caught from the lake.

Someone is feeding you a line. Sounds like you took proper care of the fish, they will be fine. I have caught the same fish behind my house roughly 10 - 12 times over the course of the last 2 years. She looks like she was bitten by a turtle behind the dorsal fin and is blind in one eye (maybe this is why I catch her so much). She's up to 6 pounds now, I know it is the same fish because of previous injuries and she seems to have zero trouble surviving being caught and released. She doesn't seem to be growing really fast though, which is probably because of the bad eye which probably inhibits her from catching a lot meals. fish

Lmao at the responses. According to the PETA video, you're one sick dude. But at least you didn't consume their toxic flesh.

I couldn't count the number of fish in the last 5 years I have caught that have had hook and cull tag wounds in their mouths.I have seen many wounds that are "healing" just fine.

The only time I have experienced the loss of a fish from being hooked is when it was hooked in the tongue. I don't know why but they always seem to die when hooked in the tongue.

Actually, the "state stocked bass" are much more fragile than the "non-state stocked bass"...lol

Seriously, hook-set to your hearts content.

Hook dem bass & release em. You're doing the right thing teaching your son to fish. Good job. The only thing you can do possibly is dowsize your hooks. May or may not make a big difference. Keep on fishin.

To the OP, I've been on the State Owned electro-shocking boat a couple times. Those fish TOTALLY recover within 2-3 minutes of being stunned by the shock. Seen it with my own two eyeballs.
