Decided to take a walk to the pond and throw a few homemade fly's out into the water for some bream and bass. The bite was slower than normal, but I kept walking the perimeter and finally found me a small bass. Kept throwing out my fly and caught what I thought was a bream fish.....That wasn't the case... I've been fishing this little pond for over 12 years, caught catfish, bass, and sun fish. Never have I ever caught crappie out of this pond. I did manage to catch some bass, but the crappie is what had me stunned. I have no idea how they got into this pond, but it seems that my visits to this pond will be a bit more interesting.

If its your pond and/or you really want to get into it, remove the otolith from the net crappie you get and count the rings to age it(probably will need access to a "scope") ...pretty reliable technique for aging them. You might be shocked to learn how old that crappie really is...I'd bet many, many years.

The pond isn't mine. It just happens to reside in a wooded area owned by my neighborhood. It isn't developed so I have to walk through the pastures to get to it. I'm usually the only person in my small subdivision that fishes the pond, so its almost my own private little escape. I've fished every inch on this small pond with bass baits, bream baits and catfish baits. Now a days, I take the 5wt rod and fly fish the entire perimeter. After 12 years, I'm surprised I've never landed one of these before.

Nice work. Those photos are beautifully done! I've had them turn up in very unexpected places as well. Taking flies of the top in big lakes to tiny creeks. Been catching them more and more in the Brazos. Probably all the big releases.

Thank you for the compliment on the pictures. Bit of an amateur IPhone photographer. Been back at the pond the last couple of days trying to find more of them. The cold snap shut down the bite...
