just got a new ugly stik 7ft med/light paired it with an abu garcia black max 3 bc. havent used it yet but i wanted to know if i can use it to fish from weightless plastic worms (yum dingers) all the way up to 1/2oz jigs?

im hoping to use this rod and reel as an all around multi lure/purpose combo, mainly for bass fishing but also for an occasional catfish and some bream, from the bank to using it in a kayak.

will have 12# trilene big game mono.

thanks and happy new years. smile

I heard you can't break em.. will it work, yeah, is it optimal, not really. Take that medium light back and get a medium-heavy or at the very least a medium.. and while you're at academy exchanging, exchange that black max for a h2o motive or mettle reel.

Well I think from a value point this setup is good step in the right direction. The Ugly Sticks I trained my children on would be best described as a numb stick but usable from a learning tool at a good price point.I wanted for them to feel more of what the line transmitted yes Big Game in my opinion is the best mono there is. However a good flouro like Segar InvizX in the 12# would detect a lot lighter bite as well as the terrains you run through. Usually in that rod class weightless senko/yumdingers or anything from 1/8 ounce total hook and plastic up to added weight bullet sinker to weighted hook or Jig up to a 1/2 ounce you got a good beginning. I really like a senko/yumdinger to a senko or rattlesnake to have a slow fall nose down a 1/16 oz slip sinker or a level fall weighted 1/16 oz hook or a reverse drop a nail in the tail. This also work well for small cranks too. Good luck tight lines and Happy New Year.

I have a 7' GX2 medium spinning rod that I use as a worm and frog rod with no complaints. I'm not sure about the medium light rod. Good luck.

this is an upgrade from my old shakespeare agility bc reel and shakespeare durango 6ft medium rod lol

the gx2 is a 2 piece rod, reason i got it is because we only have one vehicle (a cavalier) so space is limited and the rod was the only gx2 in a 2 piece in stock at walmart. there was med/heavy but they were all one piece. as for reel, i dont have an Academy where i live, limited to a basic walmart and the drive to an Academy would be about a $20 trip for food and gas plus the reel and maybe a rod would be out of the budget i had.

combined, its an $80 combo. my most expensive combo in my arsenal. smile

i mainly fish using weightless plastics or small crankbaits.

i will be going out later jan 1 for my first catch of 2017 i hope lol.

happy new years to all. and thanks for the tips and replies.

Faith; no problem with that set up. I have 3 Black Max reels on Ugly Stiks. They have landed quite a few 7# bass from Athens all the way down to Falcon. Go enjoy yourself & catch some fish

The medium light ugly stick is good for small cranks and fine for weightless worms

I wouldn't throw a half oz jig with it, but a 1/4oz jig would be ok

I have some medium gx2 and medium heavy gx2. Just about unbreakable unless you step on a guide
Up until this year, I used the medium heavy gx2 for large Crankbaits; and it was great. The medium heavy are heavy in weight and I was developing some tendinitis in my wrists, so I switched to a medium heavy that was lighter in weight

If you like how it feels and it catches fish, then you have made a good choice.

I use my 7' medium Ugly frequently, tossing up to 1/2 oz Roosters and 1 oz slabs. Caught up to 12.5 lb cats, but mostly LMB, sandies, and hybrids to give me good fights. It may not be adequate for frogging and worming where the hook set is more important. Keep your line wet, and you will become familiar with the touch and become confident. Good luck!
