It is not a secret anymore wink and yes it has been marked with orange tape over the years but the floods wipe out most landmarks every so often. The hardest part is finding the mouth of the Yegua or following whats left of the creek channel in the lake. I have a lighter yak that is easy to drag over land for short distances so I will take the most direct route to the Yegua.

I can't say for sure when I'll be up there next.. most trips now days are a "spur-of-the-moment" sort of escape from obligations at home, work or church.. I don't plan much of anything in advance because that just brings on too much disappointment when a fishing or hunting trip gets cancelled. I can escape to the creek or the ranch at a moments notice and that comes with greater excitement & appreciation for the time and effort to do so..

I fished Nails yesterday because I don't have any tall mud boots.

I caught a nice LMB around 15.5" and a little one around 11". I also snagged what looked like a buffalo and maybe a gasper goo.

Fish were caught on a 1/2 ounce Strike King Red Eye Shad in a Green Ghost Minnow pattern. I tried jigging around sunken timber and also an inline spinner but never got a nibble on those.

Yakked up Nails again on Saturday.. murdered the crappie and bass.. lost count before the second hour on the creek.. J-Moe did the same.. best fishing I've ever experienced up any Somerville creek. Yegua is also thick with crappie and bass but we didn't need to do that longer paddle to catch a good share of fish. What a way to end the year. smile

Kayaked Nails again Monday after the storm blew through.. muddied up the creek and shut the fish down.. worked reel hard for very few fish. went from boom to bust. Give it a few days to clear up again and the bite should return.. might even be better wink

I was planning to kayak Nails Creek tomorrow. Now I'm wondering if I should go somewhere else (probably Bastrop for bass). Do you think Nails will still be muddy tomorrow?

Fast moving violent thunderstorms blew through our area early Monday morning dropping enough rain to muddy up the creeks and shut the fishing down. J-Moe and I kayaked Nails creek to find that the crappie bite that was so good two days before had all but disappeared under a flush of fresh water heading to the lake. Even though our holiday creek fishing trip was not the greatest it does set up for brighter days ahead. I don't believe it was enough rain or rise of the creeks to bring up the whitebass but we will find out later this week.. stay tuned sports fans..

Lake Somerville State Park has opened the Nails Creek Unit boat ramp allowing access for kayakers to Nails creek and the Yegua.

Wow, you're catching a ton of Crappie and Black Bass on those little jigs. Has any member of your fishing group used Bait Casting tackle and larger lures to specifically target the Black Bass in Nails or the Yegua...or is it pretty much you guys go Crappie fishing and the Blacks are killing the little jigs also?

They tend to be keying on smaller patterns. I tried throwing a big seducer fly hoping to catch a 5 or 6 lber but had less luck than I did with the smaller jig head flies. I also noticed that I had better luck throwing a 2" curly tail grub on conventional gear than I did using a 3" curly tail grub. It sure is cheaper losing a 20 cent jig vs. a $4 spinner bait too, LOL!!!

But there are a few guys catching nice bass on spinner baits. Also, the bass are holding tight to the trees and submerged logs so it might be worth trying a big bass jig around the same structure. I didn't try that.

Several guys, including me, were fishing with more traditional bass baits on Nails yesterday with basically zero luck. Most fisherman on the creek were reporting a slow day overall so you might get better results on another day, but folks were trying TR worms, spinners, etc.

By the way, it was great meeting several of the gung-ho College Station/Bryan fisherman on the creek yesterday. Great guys. Very helpful.
