It has begun! The white bass are thick in the Nueces River. Launch at 59 and catch limits down river. Or launch at airport and go up river and catch limits! Great time to get a quick limit for the freezer! 2 man limit caught in 3 hours on Wednesday.

If launching at 59, boats would be better bc that's where all the boats launch.. It's fairly narrow, but boats will be flying past.. Most kayaks launch at airport rd and just go north and fish the sand bars and are killing them up there too.. I trolled shad pattern crank baits. They dive from 2-5ft. Trolling down south of 59 worked best..

Been fishing the river for 3 weekends in a row. White bass are staged at the mouth of the river and only just started to stage. I've trolled from the mouth to the 59 bridge, picked up a male here or there. Another 4 weeks and they will be thick, but not just yet. If u wanna find the fish luanch via the lake and troll the mouth. Limits can be found there, but its more miss then hit right now. Friend of mine has been nailing the whites on the Guadalupe river, near the cyprus creek boat ramp, trolling shad raps. I am heading there this weekend! http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/12012868/Guadalupe_River#Post12012868

I think that would be Rebecca Creek Boat Ramp # 11. It's about 5 miles upriver from the river mouth at the lake. Only ramp on the river. I'll be trying the mouth and a aways upriver tomorrow. FYI It's a good idea to have 4 wheel drive if you launch from that ramp.

Right now it's always going to be hit or miss as someone mentioned. A lot of those fish you find early are pretty much resident fish that are not coming up river from the lake. They will follow the bait fish so if you can locate the bait balls you should be on the fish. The cold fronts will slow them down and give them lock jaw as well. It's early and the big spawning run is still several weeks away. Your best bet is to troll until you find them and then either troll back and forth and try to stay with the school since they aren't heavily concentrated just yet.

We had a hard time caring fish on the Nueces casting... Even after limiting out, we tried casting the same areas and didn't have much luck. Everything we caught came from trolling... I know several guys that just have kayaks are limiting out way up river north of airport rd launch as well.. Guys casting at the boat ramps are catching too.. They are all over the river in the Nueces.

Happy Times are upon us. I just hope this year there are more etiquette at the air port boat ramp. And im putting this out there, but do not get your kayak ready at the boat ramp. Have it ready before you get there, so the ramps are not blocked

Yea in the guad above canyon I'm not sure they have made it too far up river.. I'm still finding them with the striper on points. The Nueces always starts earlier. About half our stringer were females. Tons of males way up past the air port launch already. Some other guys on San Antonio forums are posting 5 man limits right now up and down the whole Nueces.

Have it ready before you get there, so the ramps are not blocked I had to wait on three kayakers last year that took over the ramp taking their time and taking over both ramps while I had to sit there waiting to launch my boat. I'm retired and I don't get into a hurry anymore, but while I waited I thought it was a little chicken----! I am also a kayaker so I know what it takes to launch.

went the last two days and did well enough for me and my kids--no limits but lots of fun and good fish--only one throw back in two days--as far as the ramp goes the first day as me and my son were getting things ready in the parking lot some idiot in a toyota pick went by us straight to the ramp--we got there ready to launch and he was still fixing things--i just backed up to his truck and unloaded my boat and gear and he had to wait on me--by the way the other ramp was block by kayakers, taking there time to get ready--i also own a kayak and know what to takes to launch--cant wait for the water to go down and the big boats can't launch there(just saying)

Water is up pretty high with rain coming this weekend. I haven't seen a very good camping spot between 59 bridge and the lake. But the fish have been in and biting good.

A few of us old Timers are so happy that the river keeps on producing Ive been fishing this river for the past 25 plus years. There have been good years and really bad years on the spawn Ive seen us get so excited with everyone catching limits then a good heavy rain comes and turns the river to Chocolate milk shutting the catch down !! Jimbo - Knows the ups and downs as well as Myself. Ive been sharing this fishing forum with him and his knowledge for many years. Anyhow- Im excited 'once again' for this season which is shaping up to be a really good one !! Im headed to the Deer Camp where I keep (STUMP JUMPER) My flat bottom boat! I use Valentines Day as my peak of the Spawn in the shallows way up river !! The catch thats going on now is typical with different groups of whites scattering in the river from the mouth to the north shallows. Right now any day can produce on the river as the fish load up ! Hope everyone has a great season with full Stringers Rio
My stringer is getting there!!

Riotex nailed it... Especially about the rains turning the water into chocolate milk. They really don't bite good until a few days after the water clears up. Once you find a pocket of fish weather it be up or down river, just stick with it and keep trolling or casting.

Yep, any rains upriver in the Atascosa that dumps into the Nueces will turn that river into chocolate milk and shut down the bite. My neighbor and I fished yeaterday morning and we both limited out in under an hour. It was the best day I've had out there in years as far as numbers and how fast we loaded up in one spot. It took longer to run up river than it did to catch those limits. LOL! Others around us were doing the same and you couldn't get your bait into the water fast enough. I even caught a couple dangling the lure over the side while trying to pick up a fish off the floor....It was crazy. We limited and then started half heartedly fishing for catfish which we did catch three keepers before the wind came up so strong we decided we needed to head to the house. The river is up as high or higher than I've ever seen it and those old sandbars are under water and you can cruise right on over them without dragging. A good rain up above will kill the bite though. I did notice the size of the fish is a little off from years past but that is understandable due to the dry years we've had so we have more younger fish which is a good thing.

I will say that going during the week it will be a little more crowded and due to the fact that the river is higher will mean more and bigger boats up river so please everyone have patience, (it can be hard) and be courteous as there is plenty of fish for everyone. No need to ruin someones day on that beautiful river for no reason. I hate to sound preachy but that launch is not ideal as there is little area to comfortably tie up on the shore to load and unload, so have all your gear ready to go before launching. Thank you to the two guys who decided to park their company vehicle halfway down the main ramp and eat lunch sitting in their truck with their orange vests on, passing a lunch box back and forth watching the river and eating lunch while people were trying to launch their trailer to pull out. After thanking them for moving they still didn't get it! Oh well, but that is a true story, I don't just make this stuff up!

With the river so high and just in case of muddy water after the rains, you can try Tipp's Park in three rivers for some off the bank fishing which should be good this year.

The fish bite has been out of control this week... most catches were females out of a kayak and many others are reporting limits. As per the boat traffic, it is a highway of high powered machines disturbing the peaceful enjoyment of tranquility in such a beautiful place. With their big engines coming roaring around the bend can be scary while on a kayak. Yeap lots of traffic so courtesy is a must. BTW, bank fishers are producing as well. So, if you don't have a boat bank fishing is working as well.

That was'nt me ! My little ol Stump Jumper is a 14 ft. John boat that got its name when we would run the river from 59 Bridge all the way to the shallows This was back in the early 80s before they built the Airport Ramp. We would get way upriver having so much fun that we would forget the time of day Late evening would creep up on us and we would run back to 59 bridge in the dark holding a little spotlight !! We would hit stumps that we could'nt see--- But the little john boat always got us back SO we named the boat " Stump Jumper " I havnt been down to river yet this season. Had to put my Mom in a skilled Nursing faclilty. Mom comes 1st ! I should be down there in a few weeks so you guys save me a few ! RIO

I suppose it's a common term... snookered

This was back in the early 80s before they built the Airport Ramp. We would get way upriver having so much fun that we would forget the time of day RIO Also back in the day there wasn't a limit on white bass!....Yep, no limit! And bringing back 300 fish was fairly common and most the time you stopped at that number or less because you dreaded cleaning that many fish. So not only did it take you until way after dark to get back to the ramp, but then you didn't get to bed until after midnight because of the work that had to be done afterward. You younsters don't know what fun is!

Any updates? Did the river end up getting muddy from rains? Is the bite still good?

What I heard was it didn't have too much an effect as far as clarity. There is a ton of people down there and boat trailers parked all the way past the Airport entrance on both sides of the road. That was this last Friday. Too many people and not enough river for me. You could probably walk all the way from the launch to the riffles walking from boat to boat.

Thanks Jimbo, may try Wednesday or Thursday to beat the crowds. Does anyone know if Medina Lake has whites left for a run this year?

Went out yesterday with my buddy and caught 32!! Not exactly a limit for each but certainly enough. First time on the Nueces. The weather was ideal, the water clarity was pretty good, but the bite was awesome! It was hit and miss throughout in the beginning but we reached what some were calling the rapids and it was on!! Boat traffic I would assume was med-hey maybe? About 25-30 boats/kayaks all altogether.

I took my dad out yesterday (a Monday)and left feeling somewhat disappointed. We arrived at the Airport Ramp early at 0645 and there was already a line starting to form. As I was waiting to put in, one of the guides said a few days ago another "fisherman" parked next to his boat and started fishing the same hole as him! When the guide mentioned something about common courtesy, the guy lifted his shirt, revealed a handgun, and said it was a public river. Wow. That quick conversation pretty much set the tone for the rest of the trip. We launched after that and slowly started making our way up river. Within about 30 minutes, there was an armada of boats all hauling butt to get to the rapids ASAP. We passed one couple who thanked us for going slowly around them, but then listened as the wife used every expletive in her vocabulary to describe the other boats who nearly swamped theirs. We kept trolling and trying spots until we eventually found about 15-18 boats all tied within a few feet of each other. That is a little close for me, but one nice guy on the bank waived us over and said we could fish his spot as he just limited out. We did and started catching but I could tell the bite was slowing down. Then a huge pontoon came around the corner with about 8 guys on it listening to rap music really loud. Yeah, they tied off about 5 feet from us. About that time, another guy on the opposite side turns his country music up loud to counteract the rap music. I'm not sure what was worse, the music or the guy on his cell phone having a business conversation for 15 minutes so the whole river could hear. Anyhow, at this point I had about had it, so we headed back. As we approached the ramp, there was a guy with his boat parked near the water cleaning the 50 whites he and his daughter caught. He paid no attention to us or the guys in a canoe behind us who could have loaded quickly if he was not blocking one of the ramps. No, he just kept filleting fish and tossing the carcasses in the river. When we pulled out we met a friendly Game Warden who was asked about out trip and how we did. As I explained everything, he agreed that the river was packed with people and that the fishing was becoming hit or miss. He then left us and turned his attention to Mr. Courteous who was still filleting fish and making a mess on the ramp. Before I left, I removed a 12 pack of empty Natie Light bottles which were broken and in the middle of the parking lot. Oh yeah, we brought home 14 white bass.

Yep, I made a trip down there early in January and it wasn't crowded at all. We limited that day and I was anxious to get back down but things came up and I missed going back. Then I started hearing the horror stories about the crowds and I've made up my mind a limit of whites isn't worth the hassle. People leave their manners before they get to the parking lot and a lot of them don't have any at all. I've fished down there for over 40 years and never have I seen it as bad as it is now. That said, there are more people and of course you have the internet which contributes to the chaos. I hate to say it, but someone is going to get killed on that river.

From what I could tell the guy played dumb and the game warden just told him not to do it again. The fishing was slow for us. We managed to catch 6 total but never could find a spot with consistent action. Has the spawn really started yet or is it still just building?

Yeah about two weeks earlier my boys and I had a great time and didn't have to go far to fill the ice chest. Yesterday was tough fishing for sure. We fried the ones we caught last night and they were good. Thanks again for the ones you guys gave us!

It's a shame the SA-area lakes don't have their runs until later in the season. By the time they start running up North, everyone's freezers are full of Nueces White Bass. I tried to limit my trips to weekdays to avoid this mess, but now the ramps are full even on random weekdays. Gotta love Facebook....

I know one of the guides not well, just met and talked with him a few times and I run into him ever so often on the water, and he is one that fishes it most every day down there on the river. Personally I couldn't do it and put up with all that he puts up with, and getting $300 a trip isn't worth it. He takes out a few people and limits out and is back home by noon, so that's not a bad payday but when you figure in all the gas and other expenses it doesn't sound like much. You can't blame the guy as long as there are people lined up to pay, so what if it's shooting fish in a barrel for a few hours? I'd also add that he is booked up, and I'm sure the others are also.

The Nueces run starts extremely early... It very well could be coming to an end, however, spawning white bass in any river is typically hit or miss through out the season. I caught almost a limit right after Christmas. Limits been coming out almost daily in the month of Jan. Usually it's pretty good on the Nueces through mid March.. If you stop early and start testing the 99 bridge you might have a little less crowd and good fishing should be starting up.

I hear you, and understand that "you gotta do what you gotta do to survive"....however, the amount of pressure that place is getting these days, with the amount of boats and the amount of fish taken on a daily basis won't be sustainable after a few years....I've been fishing that section of the river for over 20 years, and the amount of traffic over just the past three years has gone off the charts... and the point is, I don't remember seeing guides there on the weekend until this year....I'm betting these are new guides who haven't been fishing the river for years and years, they've just been fishing the internet and facebooks for their hot tips....LOL snookered

I doubt that it won't be sustainable, and if it is it will mean that there will be fewer crowds and more room at the boat launch in years to come. I'm more than OK with that! As for the crowds, I'm afraid they aren't going to go away unless the river goes down like it's been doing the last several years, and this year is crowded because the river is higher than it's been in years, but I'm sure you know that. I used to think it got crowded down there before the days of the internet and I can remember a lot of days when I could count on one hand the number of boats I saw on the river during the peak of the run.....Oh how I miss those days!

We went 5 times last year and limited Jan 29, Feb 15, 18, 27, March 23. Feb 27 was the only non-limit. Caught them as late at early April in years past. Have not been yet this year but know they started well before Christmas. Been faring with deer and javelina hunters so have not been yet this year. Rather miss all the drama...

Sounds like I'm not missing much. It's usually me and my wife. We normally go as far as we can, pull the boat even further over the sand bars, and go till we can't hear voices or music any more. Usually 4 hours of portaging and 2 hours of fishing. Hate that people have to be so rude. Hope the wardens check a few of the hoodlums.

I hear you loud and clear on that one! it's like Lake Havasu, or the Sandbar at Islamorada these days....LOL! was going to go to the river this weekend, but think I'll just stay down here on the coast, dump the big skiff, and go chase some black drum and trout....they're schooling in the channels with the low water... y'all tear them up and please continue to report back when you get up there! snookered

Fished the Nueces again today... South of 59 marking fish. Trolled some crank baits and nailed them.. Easy 2 man limit.. Casting sassy shad in a couple bends landed several more.. Saw another boat who went further south, came back with 100 fish for a 4 man limit.. It's on down south!

Im good friends with Rob- He called me after his experience -that Monday- while fishing with his Dad. As I mentioned in a earlier report: Ive been busy getting my mom set up for care in a Nursing home and hav'nt been able to make a trip this season. Was gonna go get my John Boat (Stump Jumper) at the ranch and go visit the river as Ive done for the past 30 years in mid Feb. ! But after these reports and all the craziness Im thinking of letting ol Stump Jumper sit this one out!! But Yes Jimbo !! I can remember the good ol days when the river was less crowded and everyone was more Respectful !
My stringer is getting there!!

went Saturday...put in at Airport and went north to the shoals....there were a few boats, but we made our way up from them....fishing was still pretty good, almost got a three man limit, but we got a late start....only two females, and they still hadn't fully hydrated their eggs...
no guides this trip, maybe they were south...first trip we haven't towed someone back in....people were playing very nicely together this trip...good times! snookered

I've heard and seen reports of people getting skunked north of air port road lately.. Not sure if it's over or not though.. They are still being caught south of 59bridge

Its over. 2 men went out on sunday, only caught not even 20. Not many females either. Don't even bother anymore. More hassle dealing with boaters than catching fish.

I saw reports from today from a couple guides who collectively had over 100 fish... It's def the tail end, but there are def fish still in the river. However this rain that just hit the Nueces might create enough current and muddy water to put an end to things.

Jaime Cerda is a guide.. This was his catch yesterday. He's typically trolling crank baits. Gotta go down river from 59. He says its 6 miles to where he starts fishing. I went with him on the trip that started this thread.
