Deep cranking is a deadly technique this time of year. In this video, I show the viewers step by step, the basics of cranking contours for winter bass; and exactly how I m catching my fish. If you would like more bass catching action subscribe to the channel! Enjoy!! https://youtu.be/khueXlE1Xkc

nice video! maybe some more details about gear ratio, line size, maybe why you prefer braided line for cranking. few things like that could make the overall video a little better Imo

nice video! maybe some more details about gear ratio, line size, maybe why you prefer braided line for cranking. few things like that could make the overall video a little better Imo For the time sake of the video I didn't include all that. It's hard to keep viewers interested in a video if it's over 5mins long. lol Also explaining why I use that set up is really a whole video in itself. I will have a video coming out soon on why I use braid to a mono leader with a glass rod. There are honestly so many reasons and advantages on why I use that set up. Thanks to for watching!

I really enjoy your videos - they don't waste time with 30 second intro segments and there's no blaring music. But you manage to pack in lots of helpful info.
Quick question - why were there 5 or 6 crankbaits laying out on the deck? I couldn't see them very well but they all looked similar.

Longer videos actually will do better for you down the road. People searching for technique specific videos want all the info you can give them.

So what are your reasons to use braid and leader for cranking instead of all monofilament or fluorocarbon lines?

Some more points, if you don't mind:
1. I normallly vary my retrieve until the fish tell me what they want, stop and go, jerk, etc.. BUT, that might just be me.
2. Throw a bait that will go deeper than you want it to go. He did not explain this, just told you he was fishing a 6XD in 14' of water, but try throwing a CB that goes deeper than you want it to go to make sure and dig bottom.
3. Use as light a line as you can get by with, but not TOO LIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! I normally crank with 12# McCoys's Mean Green, it has GREAT streath, GREAT abrasion resistance and GREAET strength. I fish 12# in open water, 15# in brushy water and 17# in woody water.
4. Don't be afraid to throw your deep crankbait shallow, if the situation dictates. I have caught a ton of fish throwing a DD22 in 4' of water, some GOOD fish, too.
Just so you know, I have 5 CB articles that have been published. Hope this adds to this post and I am sure Chris would have covered this if he had more time. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Those are just the crank baits I was started out using. I think most of the were Norman Deep lil N. some by rapala, and what knot. Just trying to see what the bass wanted on that particular day.

Thanks for watching! I would go with the Abu Garcia veritas 2.0 winch cranking rod. The rod I was using in this video Is one that is not made anymore, But any glass rod 7ft and longer will work. Typically the longer the rod is, the longer of a cast you will be able make and help the crank bait reach it's maximum depth. I will have a video coming out soon that will go in to detail about my cranking setup, and why I use the equipment that I use.

No response to the braided line question??
I don't know your reasons but I would assume 20# braid is thinner and stronger than 12# fluoro. or mono. and then you add a leader line to help absorb some of the shock and to allow some degree of stretch even though the glass rod has a lot of give to it. That would be my reason for choosing braid but with that being said I haven't tested cranking with braid vs. cranking with fluorocarbon or a co-polymer line to see if it makes a difference to the fish. Braid "sings" quite a bit coming through rod guides. Other lined do not.
