bob one of these days were gonna have to meet up out there. me and my buds usually go monday afternoon and stay till 1 or 2 am. i know monday i got there at around 7 and they were still hauling in spanish macs like it was going out of style. couple kings were caught as well. i was starting to lose hope for that pier as i just wasnt catching there like i had been at san luis, but the past monday was incredible. bullreds, sharks, smacks, sandies, croaker, slot reds, stingray, i mean it was non stop all night. im guessing since youre catching slot reds, you and the wife usually fish towards the front ??

Yup up in the shallows . We also get the bulls to just not as many . BUT in Sept and Oct . the bull will be everwhere from 1 ft of water to 20 ft of water . Last Fall I saw 6 reels get pulled over the rail . I'm off on thursday and friday and we usually fish thursday night when its hot. Wife can't thake that burning sun .

You dont really need any super heavy stuff .But no ultra light ether. I use a Garcia 6400 c and a 4 ft medium catfish rod with 20 lbs test . I use a double drop leader with a 2 oz surf wt with long shank #6 hooks.

So when does the bull red run usually start?
Also, just curious, I had a bull red straighten out a 5/0 hook last October on the Galeston pier and we saw it and it looked really big. What is the ideal hook to use for these big boys? I dont want to lose another one! I think I might have had the drag set a little tight, but with there being so many people out there, I didnt want it to tangle up with 10 other lines.

i use anything from a 10/0 to a 14/0 circle hook. works well for sharks, reds, and jacks around this time of year. i always open the hook up alittle more and offset it. ive had better hook up success like that.

Sept 20th at Galveston Fishing Pier . Weather was good , water sandy and only 2 tides . Fishing was not that hot . I saw a couple of Bullreds , a few sharks ( undersize) and not much else . I managed to get a nice 8 lbs red myself a few gulftrout up to 2 lbs and a 1000000000000000000000000 hardheads .

I'm coming down on the 10-10 with my son, will probably be fishing 61st in the evenings, but we are bringing the boat so in the morning's we'll be out off the end of the Jetties.
What's the seas been like? I've been watching the buoys and see 2-4' @ 20 miles, is that what y'all are seeing as well?
Also are y'all seeing a lot of Sharks? Our primary focus will be Sharks from the boat?
What's a good shark bait, and where's a good place to buy it? I was thinking Mullet or Croaker, but I don't care to fish or cast for bait, would rather buy frozen and spend the time fishing for Sharks.

Sting- ray is prob the most populor . Any bleeding fish is good for sharks . I use hardheads most of the time cause they bleed good . Sharks still in surf but not for long . First real front into the 50's will send them off into deep waters. Cant tell you about offshore I do not use a boat . I'm a pier rat .....

If all goes well we won't get a cold front until after the 15th. Our trip down for the summer was a bust because of the weather, and I'm hoping this one doesnt turn out the same.
Do you know a good bait shop where we can get sting-ray or other good bait fish?

actually sting ray hasnt really been working very well lately off the pier. lately they best thing you can use is fresh sand trout, which you can also catch off the pier. next to that is if you can catch lady fish, use them, they bleed really well. if youre gonna buy mullet and shad, i suggest you exit 61st street and stop by uncle bucks or bayou bait, they usually have some pretty fresh stuff.

I hope Monday was the exception and not the rule? As I get closer to the 10th I worry more and more about what conditions we are going to run into Have any of you fished for shark exclusively? Can anyone tell me what to do to keep the meat in good shape whild fishing from a boat? I know legally I cannot clean them on the boat, but I also know that the liver and splean can make the meat go bad too.

Friday night Sept 28 and let the BULL RED RUN begin . Over 80 bulls were caught friday night off the Galveston Fishing Pier T Head. Me and my wife ( we fish the shallows almost exclusivly) managed to catch 3 keeper reds longest was a 25 incher. We also caught 2 keeper drum and a 12 or more puppies . A few croaker ( no big ones yet) and a bunch of small whiting . Warning to FISHERMAN catching over size and undersize fish I talked to Officer Smith and he said they will be going after violaters hard and heavy . I personally saw 5 people keeping too many redfish . These are all of our fish not just a single persons . Michial you can gut and scale fish just can reduce them in overall size . I keep my cut bait on ice it helps . The beachfront was sandy and very rough and WINDY up to 30 mph . But like I said the Bulls are there . Galveston Fishing Pier phone # 409-744-2273 tell them BOB said HI .

never a way to tell how its gonna be. thats why they call it fishing and not catching fish. other than stingrays, bait used for sharks and bullreds are the same. i always bring smaller rods out there to fish for bait, or reds, trout, flounder, and whatever else you may catch out there. thats the beautiful thing about saltwater. you never know what youre gonna catch. ive been fishing for sharks and reds, and ended up catching ling or a kingfish. when that time comes around for you to come down here, if its a day i can take off from work, ill be glad to meet you down there and help ya out.

Mike and I will be getting there sometime after 9pm on Wed the 10th, and leaving Saturday after the day's fishing is over. We have reservations at the Best Western.
My current plan is to launch from the Yacht Club at sunrise, and head out through the Jetties. Depending on conditions, we'll probably troll out through the Jetties. Depending on tides and how the boat cut looks we may jump through it and troll outside the jetties, I've heard the reds are good over there.
Our target though is about 2-5 miles off the jetties, and to drift fish most of the time. I'll probably start the first day off closer to 2 miles for safety. This is our first time out in our boat, and I want to work things out to make sure it's not our last.
While we are drifting I'm planning to bottom fish with Squid or something similar to see what we can catch while waiting on the shark lines to liven things up.
Assuming that things go like my normal trips we'll be in the hotel by 2-3pm resting, and probably hit either flagship's pier or 61st for a couple hours in the evening.
I'm looking to put together some chum buckets later this week, not sure if they are needed, but they can't hurt. I'm looking for a source of Manhadden Oil locally, but not having any luck. Anyone know of a good substitute?

Oct 1st called the Galveston Fishing Pier and over 300 bullreds caught in last 3 days . Also sharks , specks , keeper reds and keeper drum . The golden crocker (not really big ones) are showing up . Still windy and water sandy but I promise you the fish are there.
