Yeah, construction has started on the 61st St. Pier, but they pretty much only have a few pilings set so far. Haven't heard anything about when they might repair the Pleasure Pier or the pier on the west end, though.

Any updates on the Flagship? Do they plan to reopen that pier for fishing or are the rumors true about Landry's turning that pier into a amusement boardwalk.

well, considering how long its taking to re build the 61 pier, and the fact that they haven t even started to tear down flagship, you d better find a different fishing pier. i haven t researched the topic at all but my common sense tells me it will be at least a couple years before its turned into anything.

i am going to crystal beach this summer and was wondering what lures/bait is working right now?? i plan on surf fishing some but i do not want to go to the second sandbar so i just figured i would fish between the shore and the second sand bar. will that produce specs/reds or any other good eating fish?? i also might go fish the north jetty some too. I'm not familiar with saltwater fishing so any help is greatly appreciated.

Alright. I'm 18 new to Galveston and have grown up in East Texas. I've had summer trips to Galveston. And Other years Destin Florida. I prefer piers to surf fishing..its just not for me. But my question is this. These fishing piers in Galveston that were destroyed by Ike...there is little rebuilding going on from what I can see. Its really sad when you look at it. Granted there is these paved rock Jetties or w/e. But still people who are disabled..or elderly can't fish on those rocks..its to easy to end up severely hurt. So my question is this..there is so many saltwater fisherman in the state Texas. Why aren't Benefits being constructed? Donations,Volunteer work, etc. There are just by looking at this page many people who miss having these piers around. I'm one of them! I was 14 and caught my first Redfish off the Galveston Pier. The piers need to be rebuilt..not just for fisherman..but for the economy as well. I know times are hard..but surely we can do something to speed up this process?

The problem is the government officails and everybdy else that has to get there money to build something. Ask the guy who is building the 61st peir and you will understand why nothing is going up.

Of course its a Question of Money. It seems it allways is now adays. But how much? Are we talking hundereds of thousands? Or up in the million dollar range? Would it be a impossible feat to find ways to raise the nessecery funds? The City should be willing to help with this..fishermen will come to a pier thats worth it..bringing with them money..hence a raise in the Economy which really couldn't hurt? Could it? But I'm 18..defintely not a buisness major or anything like that. Just my opinion on things I guess.

I agree with you Colby, it's a shame to see those piers go, my Dad passed away this past year and I'm 47 and I have fond memories of fishing off those piers with him. It seems politics rules the world if the politicians can't make a buck off of it they don't care about tradition or the public good.

I just got a email saying that the Galveston Fishing pier will be re-opening estimated June 2011. That was from a email from the Owner of the pier.

This is the Email The owner of Pier sent me. The Galveston Pier that is.
The pier will be the same size as before with the addition of a larger building--no consequence to the fishermen. The permit is holding me up just a bit (I hope). I still hope to start in a few weeks. I will be adding more lighting including quite a bit more down lights hitting the water. This should help with the night trout fishing. Please do tell your buddies. Also, I intend to have a webcam and a facebook page linked from my home page that will keep everyone informed and allow input. It should be a fun way to keep everyone in touch.
