I had saved up money for a peacock bass trip to Brazil but that has fallen apart 3 times already. Sooooo, plan b. Guides are booked and tickets are bought. I fly Houston to Miami then jump onto a ferry to. Bimini (Bahamas) for a day of fly fishing flats for bone fish. Then it's back to Miami and into a rent car for a trip to key largo. First day in the keys is off shore for sail fish, tuna and grouper. Other fish will be there but those are the main targets. Next day is inshore for sawfish, pompano and shark on the fly. Next 2 days will be exploring all the keys by car/foot to fish as much as possible. Then it's back to Miami for a flight back to my domestic cage.

No it's not Brazil but I think it's a dang good back up plan!

There are peacock bass in the canals in Miami. No monsters, but it is a lot of fun.
You will love the keys.

I have looked into the Florida peacock bass. They are a possibility but I was told they really shut down in cool weather. If it's warm I may try for them as well.

I finally found a travel rod that I'm happy with. It's a gander mountain medium heavy 4 piece spinner. I chose a spinner because I think it will be move versatile. It should allow me to cast bigger lures and bait but also allow me to chunk small Grubbs and shrimp for wee fish. Guides will provide needed gear but i want to be prepared for the down time I have. I also decided to skip the airline drama and ups my gear to key largo. That leaves me with one small carry on bag.

Slowly getting things together!

When are you going ?

If Tarpon are a possibility , I strongly suggest you give them a go.
I have caught as many as 14 different species while Tarpon fishing in
Key West harbor.

good luck

I leave janurary 15th. May be a little cold for tarpon but they are for sure on the hit list. I caught a wee one in October and plan/pray for a tarpon only trip next November.

Your right about Peacock bass shutting down in cold weather... I like water temperatures over 78 degrees. Over 80 is better. LOL. There is nothing like catching a peacock bass. For instance, after you catch a large mouth and "lip" him... the bass calms down. You grab a peacock bass by the bottom lip and he really starts fighting. LOL
Hawaii has great peacock bass fishing on Oahu and Kauai. The state shut down all commercial guiding on our lake... so no guides now frown

I've read about the peacock bass in South Florida canals, and talked with people who've fished there. A dream trip for me would be to fish South Florida for peacock bass and snakeheads. The snake head has a vicious strike and first run. And they are great eating.

Hawaii is a dream trip for me. I want to fish the entire place! I don't know about your location but plane tickets from Houston to miami are cheap. My ticket over is 52$ and returning a week later is 98$. Car rental is 20$ a day and I'm poor boying it by staying on camp grounds for most of the trip. It's doable, just have to make it happen.
