I use a bench grinder to get my shapes and fine tune it with files and sand paper.

Two vibrating lures and a deep diver weighted and cleared with e-tex. The diving lure weighs 17 grams and the vibrating lures 7 and 10 grams each. Next step is a light sanding and then paint. I'm not sure what patterns to put on them? Thinking one of my most productive shad patterns but, still open to suggestions. All three will have triple grip hooks and stainless split rings attached when they're done. It took a while to get the lures balanced properly. The balsa diving lure sits nose down in the water just like the factory Fat Free shad. Since its balsa wood I expect it to have a lively action down to about 10-12 foot. The vibrating lures are silent, no rattles, the thinner one slowly sinks nose down and the thicker one suspends at about 18 inches deep. I intend to use them when the bass are skittish from fishing pressure or when they run away from plastic rattling baits...which happens more than you'd think. Next lure will be a smaller version of the Fat Free shad that runs at about 6-8 foot and maybe a flat sided squarebill with a circuit board bib. Merry Christmas to all.

What type of wheel stone do you use for wood as soft as balsa? I don't use a lot of Balsa when I am making my own. I usually run a Medium grit around 60. I would imagine that a 150 would handle Balsa but again I haven't tried it. I have a habit of cutting off some limbs from an Oak or Mesquite tree and using it to make lures. I also use Dowel rods to make mold masters for soft plastics.

First try at handmade balsa lures on the right, hard plastic DDRT 2.5 on the left. Painted but not epoxy clear coated. Before painting and after sealing the balsa lures I took them to a local pond and tested them...they worked as intended...the action was pretty good on all three. Beginners luck, I guess?

stellar work dr. bois!! can't wait to see the lipless after they're cleared. Thanks BC. I sprayed holographic glitter over the back of the lures and it really makes them pop. The pictures don't show it but the color above the lateral line shifts as the bait moves past your line of sight...sort of a blueish/silver to silver back to blueish/silver. Anyway, I cleared all three with 2-part epoxy and let them spin for a few hours. When I went back to check on them the eyes had moved and weren't level in the sockets . I used an Xacto knife to get them out without damaging the paint and plan on reattaching and reclearing them today. I'll try to post a few pics after they're done.

i've gotten into the habit of always putting the tiniest drop of superglue in the eye sockets before i attach the eyes. just don't trust that sticky backing. i can't wait to see these new balsa creations in person. you're taking this bait stuff to an art form. i better step up my game. been working on a couple other projects in a completely different genre. almost finished with this one.

Beautiful wood on the guitar body. What is it? Old school record player and some vinyl in the background...nice.
I used a forstner bit to cut the eye sockets into the balsa. Normally I use superglue to hold lure eyes in place, too. The adhesive that comes on them isn't always reliable. In this case I got in a hurry and forgot the superglue.

it's a mahogany body with a book-matched quilted maple veneer. yep still have the old faithful component stereo system and vinyl albums. nothing like the sound of the old analog recordings.

Tools...tools...more tools. Everything a person needs to make wooden lures...so far. Drew all my wooden lure templates on graph paper...measurements, weights, everything I can think of. Think I'll start on the jigs for each of them pretty soon. Awesome YouTube videos on building wooden lures...talented folks out there.

If you're willing to put in the time wooden lures are a great choice for creating a bait that has exactly the action you want in any paint pattern you want. Awesome hobby! ....if you plan to use your band saw for cutting out your lures it works best if you use a smaller width blade...1/8 or even a 3/16 allows for cutting much more precise shapes. Also, I've found that drill bits with a brad point made for wood working seem to be much better when putting weight and hook hanger holes exactly where you want them. Anybody know where to get medium density balsa wood in small quantity?? Just a few board foot. **Got some great responses back from HS bass clubs for the custom painted plastic lure donations. Thanks to those who helped make it happen. **

This fat baby should get deep. Body, diving bib, and anchors all hand made. Lurepartsonline makes a neat little tool for twisting hanger wire easily.

On the Lurepartsonline site Google "wire forming tools"....there's several models...think its called a kwik twist tool.
Do any of the very helpful luresmiths on this site who might read this post...know where to find various grades of balsa wood in or around Texas?? There's gotta be a place somewhere.
