So what is the big deal about these things you can still buy wiggle warts at the store. I've seen guys in the classifieds sell or try to sell these old baits for close to 200 bucks for 12 so let me know the scoop.

Pre-Rapala? You mean the Storm Lure Wiggle Wart? I worked for Storm Lures in the early 80's while going to OU. I've read they are available on Ebay for $25-$35.
The comments above are right on target. They're magical.

Just went to eBay to look around. They have a lot of, so-called, pre-Repala Wiggle Warts, and the pricing is not as bad as I had heard. I even saw several pics of the lures in what appeared to be the original packaging. Damn... brings back a lot of fond memories of that place in Goldsby, OK.

The comments above are right on target. They're magical. They are still called Storm Wiggle Warts. The ones you made while at OU are the real deal, but the imperfections of them are what everyone wants. The Rapala and later Storm Wiggle Warts are too perfect. They run true right out of the box. The old ones are impossible to keep in tune. You constantly have to tweek them. If they hit anything, and they will, because they run around ten feet deep, they take off in any direction they want. This is the "hunting" action talked about. Look for "wiggle wart" stamped on the bottom of the bill. The new ones say Storm. I was told Brad's Wigglers use the original molds.

Not sure but think I heard the the original Warts now sold are the same mold and plastic as the old ones? even if they are the same molds(I thought they lost them in a fire) the injection machines have been changed since they are in a different plant. That alone can change the wall thickness and can cause the baits to vary.

I have several of the originals and they do have a time when they will out fish most other crank baits. I have one I bought with a lot of used lures that I have had several people offer me $100+ for it. But it's my favorite and I don't plan on parting with it.

I might have around 100 of them. I catch fish on every lake I fish them. They work good on hubbard and somtime Texoma is lights out. The biggest problem I have is the rattles will stick and not shift side to side and it makes the bait not track well. You can over crank a original wart if you reel to fast. I love them if you go north places like beaver and table rock are great places to use them.

Anyone make custom wiggle warts? As in a generic body style with custom paint and good hooks like mustad?

Anyone make custom wiggle warts? As in a generic body style with custom paint and good hooks like mustad? There are wiggle wart clones available. They are described as using a pre-rapala bait when making the mold for manufacturing. I don't know if that's true or if that is even enough to give you what you are looking for. I have some. I've painted more than a few. I don't have that much experience with the pre-rapala wiggle wart. My experience with these is that run all over the place. The don't track straight back to the boat. Any of the guys in the lure making section can buy these blanks.

Ill be doing alot of the pre rapala style blanks over the next few weeks they will feature an up to date craw style stencil. Ill probably paint some up tomorrow and post pictures of them in the bait building section.

Dwain Batey paints some a10 wide wobble baits similar to the wart. Skirmishbaits.com usually in stock. Brad paints a damn good bait as he stated above. Just a minor wait time as he is pretty busy

those were great baits, i always attributed their catching ability to the yellow eyes. my yellow eyed baits always out produced red eyed baits.

Not sure but think I heard the the original Warts now sold are the same mold and plastic as the old ones? Someone told me they switched the plastic due to environmental concerns and you can't get the original plastic anymore.

The Best lures had lead in them. Same thing with ri vixen. The Norman pro pop was the same. I re-painted some "real" ol'skool wiggle warts for a customer. I agree with a couple of the responses about the warts now being made...yes, same mold but different plastic and not the lead balls inside. Not the same action even though the same mold type. Pradco stopped production of the pro pop after purchasing Norman....boooo!
