Hit one of my favorite spots and had a many day. Lots of small sunfish, spotted bass, white bass, and a nice hybrid surprise. Lots of fun on a warm December day. Used a small stream Suntech GM27 for most the day with size 3 pink Oni level line, 6x tippet, and a size 12 kebari. I switched to a longer 13 ft rod , 3.5 level line, 5x, and a black killer bugger when the hybrid hit.

Sweet what a weird stretch we have seriously had a two year long sandbass run!!!! I have slaughtered them in the creeks and rivers for two years solid. All this without any decline 100 fish days still possible. Fantastic fish bet that hybrid was a blast!

I have seen more Hybrids and Sandies in the river this year for sure! I think the high water this spring helped move a bunch of fish in for sure. Yes, that Hybrid was a blast! Always amazes me the size fish I can catch on Tenkara with 5x.

Yea big wet noodle will land bigger fish on light line than most would think. Yes had high water last two years where I've been fishing it definitely helped put a bunch of fish in the rivers. I keep thinking I want to get a tenkara rod to play with.

Man hit me up when you wanna give Tenkara a try. I'll turn you to the dark side. Lol. Really though, I have never taken a buddy Tenkara fishing who did not turn around and buy a rod.

I started out with one of these.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-FT-Tenkara-Fly-Fishing-Rod-With-Carbon-Tube-And-Cotton-Cloth-Sock-/171445236808?hash=item27eaeeb448:g:8CkAAOSwYaFWfgqJ

It served me well was just to long. Sold it to pick up one a little shorter.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DRAGONtail-KOMODO-Tenkara-Rod-PLUS-Complete-Starter-Pack-10-5ft-or-9ft-rod-/262682347043?hash=item3d29168623:g:k5kAAOSwmLlX9WDM

I must have gotten it on sale, I didn't pay that price.

First I'll advise, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! Ok, fishing my newest Suntech GM27 which is an amazing 9' ,one ounce ,small stream rod. I was using 10' of size 3 pink Oni level line, 3lbs tippet, and a double bead head kebari. Felt a bump, the fight was on! Holy Tenkarpa! I fought and landed this carp! Amazing what these rods can be capable of while protecting tippet. Again, this is a small stream type rod and by no means would I recommend it for big fish. The rod puts a smile on your face with 4inch bluegill. However I am still smiling and wanted to share. I can also credit a few things which I feel helped me land the fish. First cold water. I feel this fish would have eaten my lunch in warmer water. Did make a strong run though before being landed. Second, I have been catching large fish on Tenkara rods for many years. What a memory. I ended the day after catching many spotted bass, largemouth bass, sunfish( red ear, long ear, dollar, red breast, and bluegill) small baby blue cats and a drum.

Thank you. Smile is still on my face! Anyone who has fished Tenkara truely understands how amazing this catch was for me. I've had many memorable fish days on conventional gear. This rivals them all based on the fish vs gear dynamic!

Fishwfly,

Brad in Athens here on this end and I wanted to mention that I went out with ultralight tackle yesterday to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries where we met for me to pick up the rod a few weeks ago, and I caught about 20 or so trout. Not a nibble from a bluegill or bass but the trout seemed hungry.

I used 2 lbs. test on a 1000 series Ci4+ reel and threw a 1/32 oz. hair jig, black body/ white eyes/chartreuse hair. I didn't make many casts without getting at least nibbled.

Yesterday would have been a good day for your Tenkara, I suspect. The best place was over on the deck behind the smaller pond back behind the larger pond.

Lots of fun. Gonna have to buy a Tenkara as it would have excelled I suppose.

Brad

Thanks for the info Brad! Flying Fox, I was using a green pheasant colored double bead head barbless Kebari style fly with black hackle.

Fished today and the black killer bugger slightly weighted was the ticket. Caught many including this hybrid and carp. Rod of choice today was the new TenkaraBum 40. I was fishing a 5m Tenkara straight line with about 2 feet of 5x tippet.
