Sure! It's like a lot of things. But you can only do it once.

Just head out the jetties in your little boat. You'll know pretty quick how wise your decision is.

Hey Mark

I would say it's doable, but it all depends on how experienced you are.

I had a 15ft Aluminum john boat myself, and although I only took it out on fresh water, there were plenty times where the wind got so strong, it felt like I was boating in 2 foot off-shore saltwater waves.

Still, that's nothing compared to catching strong winds when you are offshore. It goes without saying that conditions would have to be ideal.

But, if you're familiar with boating, especially on saltwater, you should know when to turn back - before conditions get out of control.

This guy heads out 20 miles on his john boat, perhaps you should shoot him a message!

Anyhow, I'm new to this forum, hope my post was somewhat beneficial! cheers

Realistic, multi jointed, bubbling, gurgling bait? I think so!

Was offshore in my dad's 20' boat many years ago on a rig about 9-10miles offhore and three guys pulled up in a 14' flatbottom boat with a 20hp tiller on it. They said they did it all the time. But back then we weren't looked at as crazy for being out there in a 20' boat either, and we'd taken that boat out as far as 65 miles, 35 miles pretty regularly. People here and elsewhere would call is crazy now days for doing that.

As mentioned above, I wouldn't want to brave getting past the jetties much less going that far in a 14' jon, but I have seriously considered it in my 18 footer (mod-v),just haven't caught the right day yet to do it.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space!

Very cool link. Was interested in the description of 'dewatering' a submerged/sunken vessel.

SO what size/model boat would you recommend to someone that wants both a freshwater boat and a boat capable of going 5-10 miles out? I'm looking for a new boat but have no idea what I should look for in regards to saltwater boats and I can't afford the 150K boats I have found.

Something like a 22' pathfinder type will get you out on nice days. When it's rough, it's rough on an aircraft carrier.
