My neighbor has the San Antonio river on the back of his property and it has over run the banks about four feet. We go shooting down the small valley that has flooded so we know the terrain well. I was thinking that catfish would come out of the main river channel to get out of the current and to look for terrestrial food (worms, bugs, Drowned gophers and moles). Has anyone fished areas like this with success or would I be sitting there cold and wet for nothing.

I tied a trot line to a electrical pole. In a coastal field in 4' of water when a creek behind a 25 acre soil conservation lake lake flooded in the past. Pulled it tight and drove a T post in the ground from the comfort of my 10' Jon boat. I caught loads of channels. First 5 hooks you could bait with anything, even live perch and caught mud cats. Up to 2lb bull heads. If you skipped those 5 hooks, you wouldn't catch any bull heads. That was crazy. About the same depth as the rest of the trotline.4-5' I baited the trotline with frozen shad I caught in Granger lake. Everything went great until about 7-9days after the flood started. The fillets smelt and tasted muddy when you cooked them. We caught a few more to stock a tank, but 7 days of filleting 15 or so 3-5lb channels. I WAS DONE WITH FISHING. My fishing spot soon went back to grass for the cows. Was a lot of fun,we figured that whatever fish was in the creek would die because it really wasn't attached to anything so didn't feel bad about murdering them like that. Dad and brother still talk about that time. They don't fish and I'm sure we caught as much as they caught in their life. Good fun, catfish had snails, grub worms, and earth worms in them. Any bait should work. Goodluck, and go soon!!!

When the river floods down from our house, there is a low spot that the flood waters run through. We caught some big yellow cats in that spot.

I took liver, worms and big marvs cheese bait for a 2 hour session and I didn't get even a nibble. I tried every spot I could get to and nothing was working. Then the neighbor came by and told me to never fish when the cows are laying down, it was something his father told him and it has always served him well. I left my bait over there for him to try today if he gets a chance and his cows are moving around.

Never heard that saying. My grandpa always told me if you hear a owl screech don't fish that spot. My mammaw told me don't fish with a north wind. Then my uncle would tell me don't fish without beer. I love those old sayings, some of them are true I think.

He thought any day ending in "y" was a good day to fish! He would stop at the store and get some worms and a 12 pack of Texas Pride Beer. He always caught fish. He passed away in 95, but to this day, sometimes when I burp, I can still taste that Texas Pride Beer. That was some nasty stuff, but it was free! cheers
