Looking at the stocking history suggests a major shift in species that the P&WL are releasing. I don't know about you, but I've never found Grapevine to be overpopulated with largemouth. So maybe a shift to make it more of a smallmouth lake? Just wondering what some of you think that fish Grapevine regularly. Oh yeah and 800 threadfin lol!!

Grapevine is the only lake in the DFW area I am aware of that is actively stocking Smallmouth and not Largemouth. I fish Grapevine regularly and haven't caught a smallmouth in several years. I don't target the smallmouth so maybe that's the reason but several years ago I would frequently catch them while fishing for largemouth.

Look at multiple lakes. Each lake seems to have a unique stocking program. Maybe to give a variety of options. Fork= Florida bass, Grapevine = smallmouth, lewisville = palmetto bass (hybrids), etc...

I don't think they're trying to make it a smallmouth lake, but clearly they have recognized that the smallmouth are able to thrive to a certain degree in Lake Grapevine, so they keep stocking it. Just my opinion of course. Largemouth wise I think Grapevine has an incredible population. It's not uncommon to go out there and catch 20 dinks per trip along with the quality fish. As I understand it the determination of stocking is done by the electro fishing TPWD does. They measure number of fish per acre, and they also take genetic samples so they can determine the percentage of Florida genetics are in the lake. Those two factors determine the number of Florida bass to be stocked. Pretty awesome to have a lake right here in the middle of the metro mess with a good population of largemouth spotted bass and smallmouth. I remember watching MLF when they finished grapevine, the surprise on the professional angler's faces when they were catching spots and Smallies was priceless. I've been trying like heck to catch a big smallie out there this year, haven't connected on anything over 1 pound yet....But largemouth wise, the number of overs per trip has been outstanding this year for me. Love this little lake.

Thanks Buda I was looking for a healthy population of smallmouth close to DFW and was wondering why only SM bass were being stocked. Got to get out there soon and go for a triple.

Walleyes can't survive the summers here. I have never heard of one caught in Gvine.
