Just wandering which Balsa Squarebill you have had success with and what colors you like for different water clarity and cloud cover?

WEC E1. Get a chartreuse with black back and a shad color to start and see how you like them. You'll be getting more later.

Rapala - Heinkel Shad - Unbelievable bait , off cooler water , r and r hooks to the short shank hooks , bait will catch fish . Any time of year , any depth , you can cove a lot of water very fast . Buy them by the six packs .

I use D-baits and Stanford Cedar Shad (made out of cedar, so they are tougher than the balsa baits). Gary Dee's has some GREAT baits, but so does Dieter Stanford. May have to go on Ebay to find some of them, but they are GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I like Albino, Bone and Sour Apple in those baits. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Thanks for the replies! I have not thrown any balsa squarebills before primarily KVD 1.5 and 2.5. I have been very interested in trying balsa especially around brush.

Look up Daves custom baits, those are some great balsa baits, a little pricy but a great bait.

dr14,
I throw them on a custom built 8' rod that is a P8O3 Shikari rod blank, parabolic graphite rod, rated about 2.9 power, in my opinion. I have a Curado 200B5 reels spooled with 10# McCoys Mean Green. Sometimes, if I do not have this rod, I will throw them on a 3 power 733 Dobyns rod, too. This is an old 200B Curado (6.2 or 6.3 gear ratio, I believe)) spooled with 10# Ande or Maxima copoly line. GREAT BAITS for throwing almost anywhere. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck. I should have put that it was a Shikari blank to begin with, sorry.

Are you talking about the Helsinki shad color? I didn't find anything in Heinkel shad.
