I've read so much stuff about trailer tires/reviews/recommendations I'm about comatose K.D. but I did read a research about that exact thing and the thought was that passenger tires are made for comfort and ride where trailers tires are made to carry a load over a spring suspension, no shock absorbers like cars and they tend to bounce and cause great stress on the sides of the tires. Trailer tires have thicker sidewalls just for that reason. If you read specs you also notice they are load rated. I'm sure Rick Pierce knows his business and I plan on discussing this with the Folks at Discount where I'll probably end up going. It seems though that other boat manufacturers would be following suit. Thanks for the info. I'll probably end up changing all 3 tires.

so this topic always peaks my interest . I know a guy that had a single axle tire blow out that caught the wheel well , ripped the axle off the trailer and then took off the lower unit . Tire and bearing maintenance is usually overlooked by most . Not stating the Marathon tire is good or bad -- never had them myself .
I am no expert but here's what I have been told and what I do on my tires .
Stay on the higher side for inflation ( if the tire says 50PSI , keep it at 45-47PSI ) On dual axle trailers , keep the tire pressure as close as possible on all four . Never keep a trailer tire longer than 5 years , regardless of miles .
Lastly , I purchased a I/R thermometer ( $25 , on Amazon ) to measure both my tire temperature and hub temperature after getting to the lake and on my return trip to see if they are close in temp and I look for abnormal increase to predict failure .
Would like to hear others idea's to prevent tire and bearing issues ,

been running Carlisle for 10 years and no problem. Keep them at max cold pressure no matter what you run.

Thanks everyone for your valuable advice and information regarding trailer tires. After considerable research I've come to the conclusion there is no perfect tire and it seems they are all made in China. I decided to buy the best tire for the money making sure it's an upgrade from the Marathon's I have now. I bought from etrailers online a little larger ( 215-75-14 ) tire that has a D load range, 2250 lbs,and a 81mph speed rating. It's a Taskmaster tire and I have no idea where it's made but the reviews are good. I checked out Carlisle, Maxxis, Humho, actually every other tire that was recommended on here and at the end of the day all had good and negative comments. One thing that was common advice was tire pressure. The tire I bought has 65 psi rating which was far better than the 50 psi for the others.
Thanks everyone for your comments and advice, I used them all. May take awhile but I will give feedback on the new tire. Gracias amigo's.

Old champ, do you remember what you paid and what size ?

The size I put on my old Champion's single axle trailer is 195R14C

I bought mine back in Feb 2013 and paid $135 each.

After reading lots and lots of comments and recommendations Old champ I went with one size larger to get the load rating and at a cheaper price. Paid $87.50 and shipped free. Time will tell if I made a good choice, sounds like you did.

If you went up a size be sure to compare the inflated diameter of the new size to the old size to be sure the new one won't rub inside the trailer fender. Probably not an issue but never hurts to double check. The Kumho 857's are commercial duty and metric sized so that was something to pay close attention to if upsizing which I didn't.

Good luck.

I did check, in fact my spare was a 215-75-14. Hate waiting on shipping but the weather forecast doesn't look good anyway for awhile.

Amazing, I've had marathons on three boats since 1995 and have had only two flats, one after launching my boat at lake Hawkins, the second was after loading my boat at Lake Hawkins during the same trip. had to drive home on three tires at 4 in the morning.

Had the same happen to me with the marathons. Carlisle from discount tire with certificates. 50 psi is a must! Ps. Always keep a spare hub and full size jack with me also.

Agree with Hog Jaw tire pressure is the problem. I ran Marathons and never had a problem a few years back. Ran 60 lbs cold and drove around 70 mph many, many times to Amistad. Check out what Good Year says about speed and under inflated tires. I can't believe that a major brand can't come up with some good trailer tires that are made in the USA fish
