Ursus thanks for the info bud!

Got some fish grips on the way. If a group of yakkers is going out on big cat missions I would be in to give it shot. Gonna try from the Bass Hunter first. Would be more comfortable going after them in the yak if I had some back up. Safety in numbers is a real thing when yakking for sure.

I have a Jackson Big Rig and its pretty darn stable but I have caught a 26# blue with Bobby back in the day and... that was some real power ha ha. I could see it giving a guy heck in a yak, even a Big Rig.

Hoping to give it my first go this Saturday guys. Weather is supposed to suck with cold rain and all but no one said Big Cats vs. Tiny boat was gonna be easy ha ha. Not sure my new rod mounts will be yet but I will make do the best I can.

I'm looking forward to reading about your adventures Dan-
#bigblueselfiecoming
Chicken breast is another bait option, there have been times my only catch was on chicken breast even though I had fresh shad-
But don't discount cut perch either-
Honestly in the winter I usually go to an Asian supermarket or fiesta and buy a buffalo and use that, but there are ways to get shad from some creeks in the winter also -
Since space is an issue I'd look at using those fish grips to handle the bigger ones -

So Chicken breast I tried last winter when I took two kind half hearted trips to get at the big blues.

I sprayed the breast with dead red and caught two small blues and a few channels. Worked alright.

Another trip I had gotten a frozen mackerel from H mart, and cut that into strips. They are super oily and have "that smell". Out on the west coast thats all guys use for cats and they slay them. So that is another option I have in mind. It did not work the one time I tried it on Lville, but that day the chicken and night-crawlers did not work either so go figure.

Getting a thorw net this week and going to try that out as well. I just realized I have "fish grips". I have knock off pair of Boga Grips that work well that I wasusing to handle and weigh bass untill I got a nice scale. They been gathering dust in my garage, they should work fine for a big cat.

Get a deep water net...winter shad can be hard to get when they go deep...bait can usually be caught on most bridge columns year round on Lewisville...4-5 good throws and I usually get enough bait for the morning. Throw right against the column.

There is a fine line between fishing and floating around like an idiot!!

We used to use Sardines and Macks exclusively in Northern California. I have tried them out here and never had as much luck as I did with Chicken Breast (with or without dead read).

I always take some chicken as a backup if I cant get shad. Another good option is to try and catch some blue gill or something from a pond, and take them for cut bait. A box of night crawlers and a bobber is a fun way to catch bait.

Ill send you a message on here if there are any trips planned. I will definitely be heading out at least once sometime around christmas.

Tom sent you a pm... Do what he says

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

I go to the Jusgo Supermarket in Plano to get my bait during the Winter for blues. I can get a buffalo, drum or carp real cheap and have them cut, scale it, etc. Sometimes they will have live crawdads too. No need to freeze my hands off trying to catch bait.

Are they better without the scales on them? Is this a better option than chicken breast you think?

I am getting the net and gonna try to make my own. But options are good ha ha.

Yeah Tom is da man.

He has the best stories too, they end like this, "tossed it near that tree...and BAM 60 pounder!"

Little boats are great when used within their limits.

My biggest fish to date, a 5'11 3/4" gator gar, was caught rod fishing from a yak.

That's an awesome fish!!

I'm experienced with little boats. Been fishing for bass from a Bass Hunter (first an OG one now the newer EX) for 9 years.

Just picked up yakking in March but I've made dozens of trips in big water on it already.

But it's the Hunter getting the nod for my big cat vs small boat adventures!

I caught a 30lber on chicken breast this Feb on the kayak on LL.. 14 FOW. CB does work when you don't have shad, but shad is preferred. Rain suit, dry bag, towel and change of clothes is what I would recommend as well especially for cold water fishing.

**EDIT - Whiskey in moderation is recommended as well to keep the blood flowing on the cold days.
