Been hearing a lot of good results on the ned rig for the fall and winter times. Any good stories on them and the rod/reel setup.? I hear the lowest line you can get away with is the absolute key on catching numbers.

Here is a good and recent video of one of the better channels to watch for fishing ideas.

I can't rewatch it right now but I believe he is using 5 lbs. test and recommends a very light line. After you hook up, just don't forget not to over-muscle the fish back to the bank or boat and snap the line.

Just like in most finesse presentations, the lighter the line, the better the results.

Take a look below . . . enjoy!

JMO - I use a Ned rig when fishing clear, hard bottom lakes like Table Rock. It hangs up quite a bit in vegetation. It WILL catch fish!

NED rig flat out catches fish. I have used it on finesse spinning gear and 5lbs test as well as on BFS casting gear. I recently bought some of the "big" TRD worms and power finesse shroom head jigs. A bit larger profile.
When you just want to catch fish it's an amazing setup. I have caught carp, catfish, gar, drum, bluegill, crappie, bass, hybrid, and sand bass all on the NED rig. Fun!

I used to live a few blocks from Ned Kehde, the Ned in NED rig. Fished with hem numerous times. He kicked my butt on that dam Ned rig. As far as equipment, he always used Zebco Cardinal spinning reels with the bail taken off. I don't remember what rods he used but they weren't expensive. Always used 6 pound mono, but I think he has changed to flourocarbon now. This was about 20 years ago when I fished with him.

It was really popular with the Ozark lakes back then. It has slowly spread popularity throughout the country. I still can't fish it worth a flip. Ned still goes out and catches 50 to 100 fish on a regular basis. And he is a great guy.

I too have fished with NED tons! I remember sitting in his kitchen 11-12 years ago and he showed me some proto-types of a bait........that became the NED rig with Z plastics. He's a true gentleman and a fish CATCHING machine!! He still uses that old green Cardinal reel today!!

Fishing is not a matter of life or death,
it's much more important than that!

My buddy absolutely hates these things because they "only catch small fish"... but that's [censored]. I have caught more than 3 5+s on these things. Put em on a medium spinning combo with 10lb to 12lb flouro and you'll be set! Good luck.

I recently found some of the Z-Man baits and Mushroom heads at Bass Pro and tried them while pre-fishing at Coletto Creek a few weeks ago. I didn't use them long and did get a few bites. What I did find was the hooks are VERY Flimsy and will bend at the slightest hook set---So and pull instead of a set is preferred. I would question what would happen with larger fish with these hooks as well????

I use a 7' ML F rod and a 2500 size real. Braid with a 8# floro. leader. Use the lightest jighead you can get away with.

Hook set is similar to a drop shot hook set. Kind of a reel and lift motion.

It is a "feel" technique as I do occasionally feel a tick, more often it is my kine is moving or it just feels heavy.

Largest fish on one is a 4 10 Smallmouth.

I have had good luck with 10# test and giving them a strong hook set but not crossing their eyes. Personally, I haven't had any problems losing/ missing fish just getting hung up in isolated cover (wood) due to the exposed hook. Many times while trying to free the snag the hook breaks at plastic keeper. I always think the 10# test is going to break, but its always the hook. Reel in the slack line only to see the jig head and a small piece of the hook.

I killed them on Table Rock in March with a Ned rig. Holy cow, they couldn't get enough of them. Bounce them down the rocks off the shore and WHAM!
