Ok you sunfish gurus, Help me id this handsome critter!:

Caught him 11/22/16 in a local Dallas creek. Don't think I've ever seen one quite like this one, coloration wise.

Rudy

LongearXBG would be my guess, and its environment (diet & water conditions) gave it those colors. Sunfish (I know all the regulars on here know this) can look very different from one water body to another.

Def not a Pumpkin. They are not native to Dallas.

Cool fish though, I would have come to pick it up and put it in my aquarium.

All that being said, Rudy fishes tons of Dallas creeks and knows his stuff so asking for a fish ID means this is a very unique fish.

Thx guys, longear/bg cross makes sense. I have never caught a pumpkin seed in North Texas. Yes, color from creek to pond to lake can vary quite a bit.

To me the ear on the fish is well defined Longear! I think the area of where the fish was caught plays a huge part in it's overall looks. I would say Longear and that is just my opinion.

Side Note: I have really learned a TON being on this forum! The anglers here are simply GREAT.
