So my buddy and I are fishing down the bank at CB about 2 weeks ago and he hooks a small fish on a lizard. As he is unhooking the fish I look down the shoreline and see a massive swirl. I point to the swirl and tell him to hurry up and gets his bait rerigged so he can throw at the area.

I step on the PP button to raise the poles and we start drifting that way. His fish has swallowed the hook so he is messing with it trying to get the hook out without hurting the fish. I step on the troll motor to get us closer to the spot and I see another giant swirl from an obviously giant fish chasing his breakfast.

It's not the kind of swirl that throws water into the air, its the kind that looks like a manatee just kicked its tail to move forward a few feet.

Robert finally gets the fish unhooked and redoes his lizard. By now I have pinned the boat in the area where I had seen the commotion. We fish for maybe 5 minutes and all of a sudden I look down and this enormous bluegill floats up literally beside my boat! I kneel down and pick it up. The fish was still alive but just barely.

So I am 6' 1" and have pretty large hands so you can kind of tell how big this thing is.
Look closely at the scales missing off the side of this bluegill and tell me how big you think the fish was that had attempted to swallow it whole. wink

And just to remind you, there are no catfish, no gar, no crappie, no rough fish of any kind in CB.

I think a 12+ could have swallowed it. I've seen a guy feeding bass in an aquarium with large perch and the bass would get the perch in his mouth crooked and spit it out. After the 3rd time it was able to swallow it. The bass that tried to eat that brim probably could just not get it down after several tries and gave up. They will try to eat any and everything though, just their nature.

It looks like she had the widest part down. I bet she would have come back for another chance... No? Either way, that's a big gill and I'm sure an impressive LM!

Makes me wish I had a Matt Lures bluegill swimbait or even their talapia colored one based off the colors of that bluegill..

Found this one float on the surface on Fork last spring and bream was about the same size as the one in your pic. Bass was around 9lbs. Didn't get a pic of bream as he freaked , fell in the water and swam quickly away when I got him free......

Poor bluegills. They think that when they are really big and full grown they are safe. But nooooo.

Rog, did the bass die? I saw one on Toledo Bend one time dead from trying to eat another bass. Guess there's nothing they won't try to eat. My dad caught one that had a black bird in his mouth but hadn't finished swallowing it.

I know you have seen the damage those fish can inflict at CB.

This bluegill was FULL grown. OMG

Gigem I was fishing a area where I had caught quite a few big fish and found a school of smaller fish up on a small point. Was catching quite a few when I noticed some big swirls where I had been catching and all of a sudden the bite died. About 5 minutes later I noticed her just under the surface in front of the boat. I made a couple to her but she wouldn't do anything lol. Trolled over and figured out why. I got her back in quick and after a minute or two she swam away strong. Made me think my fluke was waaayyy to small.

Cool story Rog. We were casting a SKT Mag 110 squarebill in the area where this bluegill came up.

If you haven't seen one of those baits in person you would be amazed at the size. It is a squarebill but the body of the bait is much larger than a 10XD. Even at that after we saw that bluegill, we felt like our baits were TOO SMALL!!

Happy end to the story Rog. Wonder how often stuff like this happens. It's common knowledge large bass feed on crappie and brim and now maybe sandies at Fork and the possibility one dies eating one wrong or just too big. Chances are you saved that fishes life, came along at just the right time. Good on you.
