It see this all the time. Thirty years ago, I used to be one of them. Now, I use much less expensive rigs, and spend no where near that much on tackle. When guys like this are launching beside me a the ramp, I usually get asked "you goin' catfishin'?" No, and just shake my head.
Don't get me wrong. I love the nice rigs. Also, I can easily afford one, or even two or three. I just don't need one. I never did, actually.
Would I like to fly across the lake at 80mph like I did in my HydraSport w/150 Merc like I did back 1985? About a 100' rooster tail flying out the back? Yep. Way cool.
Is doing 35mph in my Lowes Stinger w/60 Merc working for me? Yep. For what I do on the lake, works just fine, AND is can get places the other guys don't want to go.
Please, don't think I'm jealous. I'm really not. It's just the opposite.

Not much about bass fishing is rational. Lots of other factors outrank rational. Would take a team of analysts to help us all understand our motivations!

Its more about having fun doing something you love to do.
How much are tickets to pro football and baseball games now? I have no idea because I don't go.

If I could afford a new Ranger w-250 SHO, 12" HDS front and back, Minnkota Fortrex and 2- 10' Talons I'd buy one in a minute. Problem is I can't afford it. I have no problem with those that can though. Wave when you go by. 
I am a Senager. (Senior teenager) I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 50 years later. I get an allowance every month. I have PU truck and a bass boat, I am blessed.

Not calling anyone a liar, but I highly doubt you could ever get a true 80 mph with a Hydrasport and 150 hp outboard, especially a carbed engine in 1985. 60 mph might have been tops.

Another thing I've come to realize as I get older is their are about a half dozen ways I like to catch em based on time of year. I get to pick my lake based on time of year and current conditions. It they ain't biting on what I like to throw it's no big deal. I'm not concerned about going home fish-less.
After all, the catching part is a small part of why I go.

80 might be stretching it. My dad had a plus 70 17'6" glassstream with a 150. Boats were alot lighter back then.

Won a aba bassmaster event in a borrowed 1996 r85 ranger. I was the oldest boat there. Also won out of my Nitros. It aint the boat, but they sure are nice.

Felt like 80 pre-GPS days. I had a Tidecraft Wildfire that would bust 70 with a Mariner Mag 150 and that lightweight chinewalking POS felt like 90. You can tell who embellishes when they feel compelled to tell everyone "I could easily afford a new rig or two or three...."
