Here is the situation: I'm a bass and bream fisherman that occasionally gets lucky and catches a few crappies while fishing for bream. I understand that most crappies are caught holding over brushpiles and other structure, but I fish with a bass fisherman, so we do not go looking for brushpiles.

So here is my question: .If I used a beetle spin or crappie jig and worked it over submerged grass this time of year while my buddy runs the trolling motor and we move down the bank, is is likely I could catch a few crappies, or would I be wasting my time? I do not even know if they are deep or shallow this time of year?.

Depending on how deep it is, you could very well catch a few crappie in the grass that way.

Try 1/8 oz rooster tail, you might snag some crappie and bass at the same time. Way more success on rooster tail than beetle spin. You can also use something like a curly tail grub, small jerkbait, etc.

Work the deepest weedline you can find, and definitely look for some near creek mouths, both bass and crappie are staging near creeks getting ready to run up them.

Eric, thanks for the info. I'll try a rooster tail along the deep edge of the weed line. I also have some 2" white twister tail grubs I can fish on 1/16 oz jig heads. Sure hope I can catch a few.

Tell your buddy he's missing out not looking for off shore brushpiles for bass. Bass and crappie co-exist.

Gamblinman, I've told him, but he is not willing to put in the time. Because of the things we do not do, we are not goodf fishermen.
