On the way to the lake, we decided that we would release any crappie weighing 2# or bigger. I don't think I've ever caught more than a hand full in a year over 2#. On our last trip we caught about 6 times more small crappie than keepers while fishing brush piles. On this trip we decided to fish submerged trees. We caught 15 quality crappie (11 to 15.2") with only 4 small throwbacks. I caught a 2.2 lb crappie. After a photo and weighing it, we released it. When I picked up my pole and made my next drop in the same spot, I caught a 2.0 lb crappie which also got released. A first for me - two crappie over 2# in less than a couple of minutes. Both crappie were caught on a Sour Grape Slab Bandit.
If we concentrated on the really important stuff in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles

Noticed the same thing a couple weeks ago. Mostly small fish on brush piles. I caught my pb though and it was around 2 lbs. Didn't get a scale on it. Will have to try timber like you did and see how that works next time. Nice fish!
