Thanks, it looks like a few small ponds will be stocked near me starting on 11/23. Only 8 days from now.

In these small community ponds is it best to fish the same day they stock or give them a day to settle in?

I'm wondering the same thing, but also thinking that it's not going to take long before they're all caught.

I normally like to use small spinning baits like Panther Martins the day they stock and a couple of days afterwards. Around 3 days or so from stocking I have found that power bait works best.

Has anyone ever caught these on a fly rod?

Yes, I've watched people catch them on fly rod. I'm fortunate enough to be close to at least 3 of the ponds they stock yearly. One of them is actually getting stocked next weekend. banana

What's this about a 'Trout Stamp'? Is it included in my super combo?

I have fished trout stocked ponds that were stocked on a Wed and caught my limit several days later on Friday and Sunday. It is true that a lot do get pulled out on the first day, but there is generally always a bunch left over. Another observation - I have gone plenty of times on a saturday after a friday stocking and watched almost nobody catching fish - including myself.

Trout are included in all freshwater packages. The use of a special trout stamp was discontinued several years ago. It was replaced by the Freshwater Stamp we all have to buy. It is a shame because in the days of the special trout stamp larger numbers of trout were stocked.

I have been fly fishing since I was 8 years old, so 38 years now. Stocked Texas trout since 2007 off and on. Yes they can be caught on a fly, woolly buggers, egg flies, hairs ear nymphs, standard Briminators, etc... all work well. I'm no expert, but the ponds around me only get stocked once a year, there have been times that I have caught trout up to 3 months after the stocking. As late as May this year. I generally avoid the first 3 or 4 days after stocking, just because of the crowds. There are just some rude people out there. One time I was fishing one side of the pond, pulled out a few, within 5 mins I had bait fishermen within 3 feet standing on both sides of me. And they still managed to catch nothing. landed a few more and told them they could have my spot. Went and finished the day in the spot that they came from released a few more for another day and walked off without them catching a thing. Not a good thing getting that close to someone fly fishing in the Texas wind. Good way to get a painful piercing, lol

I caught many today! Used multiple spinners, ultralight cranks, even trout worms. Caught them on all. Using the G-rods Pro Trout 69XUL with 4lbs test. The rod is the most fun stocker trout rod I have used to date! It has an awesome light tip! Even cast a weighted fly! LOL. Not far, but far enough to catch fish with it. Great time today. Caught at least 10.

I have found over the past 2yrs that the quantum xtralight 6' rod from cabelas is my go to rod. Combo is usually 39$! Heck of a deal! I switch the reel out to a sx10 Abu Cardinal is a winner for me on 4pd test.
Nice pics!

Made it to Heritage Park - one of the three ponds in Flower Mound that were stocked with trout. Rain let up, so had to make the run down the Tollway for a go at Rainbow Trout. New place... so new that Google Maps does not show the pond. It looks like it is still being built. Regardless, there is a pond, and it was stocked with trout.

Overall, the bite was steady with lots of folks getting bit. Power Bait and Corn seemed to be working; did see several taken with fishing flies but could not tell if anyone had strikes with other lures.

Fun time...! Post.

To fshng84, do you know where TRWD stocks trout on December 15 (next Thursday)? Used to be either River Park or Trinity Park, TRWD Facebook makes the announcement but does not specify where.

I plan on hitting Towne lake and Bethany lakes to try and catch some on a fly. What fly would I have the best chance of getting bit on? Also are there's fish ok to keep and eat? I figured I'd catch a limit and eat them sice they will die anyways sice it gets so hot.

I went fishing this morning at Bethany lakes and caught two small trout using orange floating salmon eggs on #12 salmon egg hooks. This was my first time catching trout and figured this would be the time to ask: while researching the topic, why have most people recommended to use #12 - #14 hooks? To me, it looks like a #6 bait hook would be a good size and my buddy caught one today while we were out there on a #6. We couldn't handle the 18 degrees this morning and took off after an hour of fishing.

Caught my limit in literally 15 minutes. Threw out a hand full of corn, waited 5 minutes and then casted out with 2-3 kernels on a small hook, on top of the chum area and limited out in no time. Granted...some of the guys fly fishing, using lures, etc, gave me a "look" and I agree it's not the classic way of catching them, but dang...it was cold. Glad I didn't have to hang around too long. lol..

i believe it's the most south one.

Good job guys. there's no shame in any technique of rod and reel. maybe they just envy you.

anyway, i just wish they stock something little bigger. I mean, would there be that much difference in terms of costs.. 8 - 9 inchers are just too small.. 15inchers would be really nice..

Sorry guys, I didn't realize the recent posts were focusing on Bethany. I've fished at Hulen Park in Cleburne and Chisolm Trail in Hurst. I'm using a #6 (maybe #8??) cricket style hook and threading 2-4 kernels of corn on the hook. I also use 2-3 split shot weights, just enough to bounce the corn around on the bottom. I cast out, keep it there for a second or 2 and then reel it in slowly, stopping every now and then. The take more often than not, is when the bait is moving. The key though is to throw a small handful of corn out to chum the fish. The fish are fed pellets at the fishery, and I think the size of the corn resembles the size/shape of the pellets and the yellow just helps with the visibility. When I cleaned the fish, they really stuffed themselves with the corn so perhaps throw a small handful out after every catch to keep them feeding.

btw..Rolled them in flour with a touch of salt and plenty of pepper. Fried them in a olive oil/butter mix until golden brown. Fillets came easily right off the bones. Dipped them in a tarter sauce/horse radish mix. They tasted great. smile

They were biting flies well up at Denison Saturday in the freezing cold. Didn't seem to matter which one, but people with bait and spinners didn't catch anything. Smaller seemed to be the ticket.

Trout were moving about and feeding on the surface at Bethany this morning. After working different parts of the pond, settled in on the "point" and was able to limit out sight casting to passing schools. Video Post.

Was looking over the stocking schedule for this year. And I say is it me or are they stocking a more trout in the ponds in our area this year? I don't remember them stocking 4000 in Murphy city hall or 6000 in Mckinney Towne Lake last year. I can't remember the numbers but it may have been the same. Pretty sure Bethany got about the same either 1700 or 1800 my only complaint with Bethany is the steep banks on that pond are too dangerous to for me to take my kids. The spots that aren't steep are either taken or not very productive to fish. I kinda wish they could stock a different pond in Allen but I don't know which pond would be the best canidate for it.

Agree on Bethany, they should stock sonic pond, then there'd be fish in it roflmao and sonic could help out, free small slushes to the first 25 kids that bring a trout over.

Lol Reshelman! That would be cool with me! Sonic pond is closer to where I live. I doubt the people that live in that neighborhood would like 500 cars parked all up and down their street though. Maybe they could stock both ponds at Celebration Park. At least their would be plenty of space on the banks. They would have to wait until January or February for that cause I think those ponds are on the shallow side and water temp and depth may be an issue.

These little fish can be pretty fun to catch.
I've only been twice so far and both times on warm days. First day was skunked, buddy hooked 3, but lost all 3 roflmao

I went back a few days later and used a silver 1/16 oz super duper(what my bud had used) and landed 2.

Tomorrow is restocking day in Katy, so will hit em after work, and the weather being cold should have them more lively.

2 Man limit within half an hour in Waterloo Park in Denison late afternoon yesterday. Between my buddy and I, we caught more than 30 in an hour and a half of fishing. I used a brass/gold super duper and caught 3 on the fist 5 minutes when we got there. Then I missed a lot of bites. We then changed to Berkley PowerBait Floating Trout Worm in bubblegum color. Wacky rigged it with a split shot 18" above it. Then it was a non-stop bite with a catch on every cast. Sometimes they hit the worm as soon as it hit the water.

Lots of fun!!!

I've only been able to snag 2 so far in 3 trips.
Use various color in line spinners, silver and gold super duper, all 1/16oz. I try different retrieves, and tried those little colored trout nuggets and nothing.

What's the secret? I've seen guys fish for an hour with no success, then catch 1 or 2 like I have, then nothing. The damn comerant birds do a lot better that's for sure.

T-Rey we went Sunday, started with an inline spinner like you, cast about 20 times with no hits. Put on a pink power worm wacky rigged on a dropshot about 6" from the bottom and could catch em as fast as you can put the pole in the water. I've found that on moving baits, if you don't get a bite within 10-20 casts, switch. There's no real rhyme or reason to it, they just want a specific thing that day. For bait, 6" above the bottom gets 5x as many bites as fishing on the bottom, at least for me.

(And if you use the power worms vs. the nuggets or dough you won't gut hook them either, which will avoid scrutiny from captain awesome above)

So no jig head at worm, just small J hook in the middle of it, and small split shot up the line?

2" or 3" worm?

Slow or medium retrieve?

I use a #6 bare hook tied with a Palomar knot about 6" above the end of the line. On the end of the line I use a barrel sinker usually 1/16 oz maybe 1/8 if it's windy. I wacky rig the power worm, whatever size they come out of the package, I'd say closer to 2". A couple of times, the worm would get bit in half and I tried to use the half and didn't get any bites. Cast it out, let it sink to the bottom, tighten up your line so there isn't much slack with your rod tip up(this is where you need to find the weight of the sinker that works) and sloooowly drag it. The sinker will get caught up in some of the slime at the bottom of the ponds and when it does, gently shake the rod tip, the worm will be stationary but wiggling around. If no bites for 10-20 seconds, pull it loose and gently drag it to the next spot it gets hung up. you will find the spot in the pond or depth they seem to be feeding at pretty quick.

Had issues with slow downloads for mobile smartphones. Made some changes, seems to work better, save for when the GoogleBots start doing their thing. Here is another post that should run better along with the upcoming events post....

Saw a guy at Waterloo using a tailless Near Deere and it was killing the trout. He used a sparkle green body and brown hackle. He also had a small red spot of thread right behind the small jig head.

So I saw a guy using can corn. So I looked on the ground and some corn. Heck I picked it up and put on my hook and started SLAMMING them on corn. All of us limited out. Everyone there was just watching us shaking there heads. Oh well. We was using lite tackle and line. Some had salt water rigs with BIG weights on. I didn't say anything. So yea we will be back.
