Seems the ecoboost fuel system routes the motors gases
and vapors back through the fuel system where it's injected
to the intake valves where it causes buildup of gunk carbon deposits
causing a hard to start and lowered mpg.

And that was a long collector build video of a possible fix.

Its called EGR Exhaust gas recirculation. It is detrimental to long engine life and no manufacturer would put it on a vehicle without their hand being forced by the big bad EPA.

Many engines have issues with it, not just the ecoboost.

As far as I know, the ecoboost doesn't have exhaust recirculation. It does have gasoline direct injection (gdi), which along with ethanol fuel can lead to carbon deposits. But as Redchevy mentioned, that's not just a Ford thing.

I was under the impression that dang near any modern production vehicle has egr. My 1994 chevy with a 350 had an EGR valve.

Just applied google foo, they have something that accomplishes the same thing as an EGR without an EGR valve driven by cam timing.

Wonder if you can stop this design with a tuner of sorts?

IDK. This is on the 2.7l:

The dohc, four-valves-per-cylinder engine employs twin-independent continuously-variable valve timing (TI-CVT), with the phasers operating in a range of over 30. Ford is able to use TI-CVT to eliminate the need for an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve.

Now maybe somebody can translate. wink

At the Detroit Auto Show in January, Ford was confident enough about its popular 3.5 liter EcoBoost direct-injection V6 to have technicians tear down an example engine that had accumulated the equivalent of 160,000 miles through an intentionally abusive regimen of log dragging, high-speed towing and desert racing. When they opened it up before a live audience, they found some light carbon deposits on the valves and pistons, but not enough to affect performance. In fact, the engine showed a loss of just one horsepower afterwards

The valves overlap a little allowing to draw some exhaust back in on the intake stroke.

I think typically these systems work better when the engines are being worked. Its periods of idle and light load that create the issues.

I don't know how many trucks have this problem but the most common symptom after its affected is your car runs a little rough the first couple minutes and then straightens out. The PCV valve puts a small amount of exhaust gas through your intake, normally affecting the inside two valves most.
The fix is not sponsored by Ford but involves catching the exhaust gases and putting them through a "catch can" to take the exhaust vapor and letting it condense. When the can is full you drain it.

Several videos on You Tube and you can find the catch can kits all over, even on Amazon.

I think you would get more carbon build up from the PCV system, not from the egr system as the exhaust gases tend to be hot dried up carbon monoxide! If you look at the inside of the intake manifold, there is always a lot of carbon build up inside, hence coming from the pcv system, which circulates back thru the valves! Plus, the fuel which has ethanol, sucks!
