Will it damage a sonar to run it on a bench with no transducer attached. I have a new Helix and want to go through the menus and familiarize myself with it's operation before putting it into use.

You can turn the sonar off.

May have answered my own question. The HB manual states that if te unit is turned on with no TD plugged it it will default to demo mode. Wouldn't that indicate that it wold be safe as long as you don't force it into normal operating mode. This is the first time I have ever run one on the bench with a power supply so I just want to be sure..

Turn off Demonstration mode and start the unit up in SIMULATOR. Your settings will be saved and you can do unit software updates, view snapshots, playback recordings, and waypoint management in that mode.

So this leads to another question...

When on plane, the HDSI transducer is out of the water.

When on plane or not, the shoot through transducer is out of the water.

Is this going to cause problems?

No, the "load" of the transducer is still recognized by the unit and it will not default to demo mode.

"the shoot through transducer is out of the water" ?????????????????
That is only possible if the shoot-thru was installed by an idiot.

My shoot through is in the bilge area. Mine stays dry for the most part.

The shoot-thru transducer has water contact through the hull. That is why you have a shoot-thru.

The shoot thru you previously mentioned? If so where the heck is it mounted?

If it is transom mounted, lower it some. You will get a small rooster tail but you will get depth readings. Mine is mounted that way and I get on plane readings at 48 MPH, which is top end in my CC.
