I think it's too much or too little water that causes it. There's a treatment. Go to HD or Lowes and show them the pic or just grunt cinch bugs and see what happens. Mom could tell you.

I typically use the organic route. I would use a heaping tablespoon of baking soda to a gallon of water. Add a little veg oil or plain dish soap to make the mix stick to the grass. Then I would spread out whole ground cornmeal to activate/feed the beneficial fungus trichoderma. I did this, this year on my St. Aug when what I believe was grey leaf spot and got great results.

You may want to google "brown patch" and have a look at the images.

Could be either Sod worms/Cinch Bugs, or it can be brown patch.

We had sod worms real bad this year.
Almost every house in the greater Houston area is had them (result from the floods).

If you walk on your lawn and all sorts of moths fly away, you got sodworms.
You need pesticide, apply, then re-apply after 2-3 weeks to break the egg cycle.

If you there's no moths, you got brown patch (fungal disease). Fungicide.
