I have seen recently that guys are starting to use braid for every application and adjusting leader size and type depending on the situation. Sounds like a good way to save money, but not sure about throwing cranks on braid leader or not...

Does anyone do this and what are y'alls opinions?

Based off what I was taught, if making the switch to all braid, be sure to drop down in stoutness of a rod... if you are using a heavy action, then drop down to medium or medium heavy. You have to have some give in there. Just make sure you really know how to tie those knots joining those two lines.

It's personal preference, but I do this and like it.
Braid mainline dramatically improves sensitivity. Gives a modestly priced rod the sensitivity of a very expensive rod. More force is delivered to the hook on the hook set. Not worried about increased visibility--seeing lots of west coast gin clear water fisherman use these set ups. Casts far. No memory. Adjust the drag so there's a little give and thumb the spool on the hookset.

The main negatives are slack bends in line on very windy days and braid's grabby sawing action on wood.

For most crankbaits I use 15lb power pro superslick to 12lb Pline CXX leader--works great. That extremely small diameter power pro superslick gets them down deep. The diving hydrodynamics of the crankbaits easily overcomes any buoyancy of the braid.

Hard jerkbaits, shaky--15lb superslick to 8 or 10lb neutrally buoyant copoly (Pline CX or Yozuri hybrid)

Flipping, frogs, and large topwaters--straight power pro original braid

Smaller topwaters--30lb power pro original to 12lb Pline CXX

Jigs, Pitching and Trig--either straight braid or braid to 17lb fluoro or Pline CXX

Crig--30lb power pro original to 12lb Pline CXX

Bladed jigs and spinnerbaits--30lb power pro to Pline CXX

Big Swimbaits--50lb braid to 20lb fluoro or Pline CXX

Good, quick line to line knot is the improved Alberto (crazy alberto)
Good line to hook knot with braid is the doubled uni.

Wind is a killer for me and braid line to use it 100% of the time. The wind is blowing here in TX. at the least 50% of the time and I have to adjust to that.
- Pitching and flipping with braid on slack line is how I fish. The wind will put it into and around limbs. It gets around the rod eyes. It will get wrapped around the handle. It is a battle for me so it is out on windy days.
- Just general casting other baits like spinner baits and letting them fall to the bottom, braid will wrap around the blade arm causing problems. The wind will also put any slack line into the bushes.
- On top water the same is true. I want the bait to sit where I throw it. Wind makes it very difficult to lay the braid on the water quickly between the cracks in heavy cover.

My alternative to all these problems on windy days is 25# lines and short cast. Some baits call for Mono and some for Floro..

Braid for deep water application can be very helpful in feeling the bite and there is a good place for it there with Heavy Drop shot, 25 ft. Crig, 20 ft. light drop shot and running Traps through deep heavy grass.

Sounds like a beating to me for most applications. I'll stay with what the pro's use.

My issue with braid for all rods is the leader knot getting caught in the guides and causing a bad pitch or roll cast. I also do not like the lighter braid (under 40lb) it just digs into the spool and I don't like how it gets blown around like crazy. Now I am coming around to pitching and flipping with straight braid or braid to floro leader. I have had allot of success with this and use the Alberto knot to tie my 65lb braid to 20-25lb floro leader. I usually tie a short leader so the knot is just before the tip of the rod this allows me to make a accurate pitch without the knot causing any issues

You can't use a Flathead Screwdriver for all repairs. roflmao
Which Pro uses ONLY Braid????? Duhhhhh
Why limit and handicap yourself. Everyline has a specific purpose and benefit and drawback.

If you're having trouble with the knot tying braid to leader, try the Crazy Alberto knot...it works well and is as smooth as it gets.

I agree with this.

I guess it depends on how serious you are. If you are the school that believes it takes 13 $400 rods with 7 different kinds of line to catch fish then yes.. there are better options than braid for a bunch of applications. As far as being economical it sure works though. I used braid with leader for awhile and found the same limitations people described above, for wind, wood, braid hangs up a blows around, but it sure was nice only breaking off 3 ft of leader instead of a bunch of line sometimes. The pros don't do it because they don't have to pay for it and there's value in it for them; and certainly stren isn't going to come out and say "just spool 15 lb mono on everything and you'll be fine".

Braid has it's good spots. Don't use it in clear water like Athens, you will get your butt kicked.
When your trophy fishing in stained water it's a must. I like to throw it on an Alabama rig. When I get hung up, I just straighten the hook out to get it back, then bend it back in place so I'm not loosing a $20 lure.

I was once a braid everything guy. then I picked up a buddies rod and was flipping a jig on 17lbs flouro and I now only have braid on one rod and its my frog rod and I also use it for heavy heavy cover. everything else is now flouro

I am 100% braid, been that way for years. For Crankbaits it's a no brainer, you will catch more bass since you won't miss so many bites

As mentioned above, braid, floro, and mono all have their applications... braid for everything would be a huge mistake in my opinion...

So... is the logic dont use braid in clear water because the fish can see it BUT its cool to throw an A-rig that has piano wire arms that look to be about 10,000lb test braid?
