Thanks, as always, for the kind words, hospitality and flat out incredible day Chuck. I still feel like a 10 year old every time I grab the fly rod. And this was another one of those truly special fly fishing locations. Thanks for always sharing and teaching me something new every time I fish with you as well.
It was great to finally fish with Alan. It's always great for me to fish with another fly fisherman. And Alan is not only a fantastic fly fisherman but a great angler in general.
I spent a lot of time fishing the shallow water vegetation with light and medium weighted flies. I was throwing it into the weeds and dragging it through the tops of the weeds catching bluegill, warmouth and small bass.
On the other hand, Alan headed off exploring and found a great little redear hole. He was fishing in a deeper hole with much more current. He kept experimenting with heavier flies until he found the right combination. He also kept repositioning himself until he could get that fly right in the seam and down to the fish. He ended up knee deep in mud and chest deep in water, LOL. But it paid off, he caught several Redear over 9 inches and had the trophy of a lifetime redear escape his grasp. It was what fly fishing is all about and I was able to experience it with him. That was special.
We also got to meet Lewis and take a tour of the river on his property. There was a blue hole that was one of the most magnificently beautiful sights I have ever seen. I'll never forget that brilliant color.
Thanks guys, I had a great time.

What a great couple of days! I had the pleasure of fishing with Jamie and Chuck and had a blast. It's great to sit down in person with the people you meet on this forum! I appreciate Chuck setting up the trip and sharing his incredible knowledge with us. In spending the day with Jamie, I can see why he is such an accomplished angler and a truly great person! I can't wait until the spring time so we can renew our friendships and share our experiences!

Thanks Curtis for the reply. You all will have a GREAT time. As for the deep pockets there are a bunch of them through that river. They look to be anywhere from 8 to 10 feet deep. Some have heavy weed beds and others do not. Current flow is good also. Side Note: Alan or Jamie may have something to add!

Great post Chuck and a super job to all the anglers. Love the pictures. Some of God's Country for sure!
Side Note: Are the fish patterns any different there than the patterns of fish on other rivers?

Thanks Gitter and progolferv1 for the replies. Gitter: Depending on the river's size and location I would think would play a factor on a river fish's pattern. As for the smaller rivers like the Nueces,West Nueces, and Sabinal I would think during the warm/hot months they would be swimming the shallows looking for food and hanging around at the ends of rapids or current waiting to ambush insects or small fish. During the winter or colder months I would figure they would be close or in the deeper pockets of water hanging on the bottoms or ledges. Just my two cents.

It really seems that each river has its own personality. The ambush points and habitat look the same but each has its own secrets which are fun to figure out when your out there!
