Newbie question but is hook size on a jig head personal preference or is there a standard. For instance on an 1/8 jig would you go with a certain size like #2 or #4 sickle hook standard or is it all personal preference? Do you change hook sizes by weight sizes of the jig head? Ie 1/16 use a smaller hook than 1/8? If its personal preference can you explain to me why you like a certain size over the other?

Thanks,

Keith

I believe its mostly personal preference.

I usually make my 1/16 oz jigs a little smaller than my 1/8 jigs, so I normally use a #4 hook on the 1/16 oz and a #2 on the 1/8 oz.

BUT, if I want to make a "small" 1/8 jig, I will use a #4 hook on that head. If I want to make a "big" 1/16 jig, I use a #2 hook.

For me it depends on what type water I'm fishing.
Thick brush and vegetation I prefer a #4 for fewer hang ups.
Open water and standing timber a #2 hook.
Bait size dictates hook size also. 3" baits need at minimum a #2 hook.

Personal preference for sure! I use mostly #4 and have that size from 1/64Oz to 1/4 Oz. Now I do also have the 1/64 and smaller sizes say up to 1/32 in #8 and #6 and depends on the kind of tying really as much as anything. I mean if you tying kip tail on a 1/16 I use a #6 hook and if it was larger some kip tails hair would not even be long enough to reach the end of the hook.

I do have some 1/8 with some #2 Sickle hooks, but really don't see a big reason to do that. I personally think a #4 is even good in a 1/4 Oz head!
