There hasn't been a crappie caught out of Fayette in 20 years. Gone to the same fate the catfish are suffering now.

The crappie could not survive becasue of the vegetation in Fayette. The cats are fine. They are deep.

The crappie could not survive becasue of the vegetation in Fayette. The cats are fine. They are deep. Go read the fish surveys conducted on Fayette. The catfish have been in decline for years. And vegetation has nothing to do with the crappie. The crappie stocked when the lake was built never spawned.

And vegetation has nothing to do with the crappie. The crappie stocked when the lake was built never spawned. Read them and other reports you didn't. Crappie never spawned becasue of vegetation (due to water temps with outflow) and mass talapia and bass foraging. The only way to know the cats are in decline is to know how many total cats are in the lake. There hasn't been a study on it in a while. If you know of a factual study done in the last two years please share. If not I am right because all it states is that "Channel Catfish abundance was low". If there is any declination in catfish population it will be temporary as it has been throughout the years. Unless you have facts to post I would not scare people off from fishing for cats there. Look at these old posts from 2009. The weather and lake level has more to do with how many cats will be spawned each year. Cats of Fayette 2009 Cats of Fayette 2009... If you want to know the facts about Fayette, talk to Weldon Kirk. He has guided for cats on Fayette for years!

LOL Maybe you need to talk to Weldon. Ever wonder why he doesn't fish Fayette except when the clients request Fayette? Read the surveys. http://tpwd.texas.gov/publications/pwdpubs/media/lake_survey/pwd_rp_t3200_1292_2015.pdfHere is what the biologist wrote after the 2015 survey: ISSUE 1: With respect to hoop netting for Channel Catfish, the relatively low total catch rate (1.2/tandem set) in relation to the high sampling effort (27 tandem hoop net series) suggests a low-density Channel Catfish population. In addition, gill net catch rates for Channel Catfish have been declining from 2004 to 2012. Prior to this, the reservoir had been a top destination for catfish anglers in the district. Blue Catfish: Blue Catfish were stocked in Fayette Reservoir in 1976, 1985, and 1986; and are expected to be extirpated. Conditions at this power plant reservoir appear to be unsuitable for the development of a Blue Catfish fishery. Our gill netting surveys have failed to collect Blue Catfish specimens. Sampling this population is not a priority in 2016-2020.

For the OP:
Crappie: Hybrid crappie were stocked in Fayette Reservoir in 1994, 1996 and 1997; and if present, their population abundance is very low, based on poor captures in historic trap netting surveys. A creel survey in 2007 did not capture directed effort for this species, revealing little interest by anglers to pursue this species at Fayette Reservoir. Sampling this population is not a priority in 2016 - 2020.

"We noticed a decline in the channel catfish population in our last gill net survey in 2008, but the distribution of fish still looked good and the reduction in catch wasn't drastic. There were also some smaller fish in our catch. Unfortunately there isn't much we can do should the catfish population decrease to nothing, other than impose a higher minimum length limit and re-stock large catfish. If recruitment to a large size is a problem, then once those fish are harvested there would be nothing to replace them and we'd be stuck perpetually stocking fish. Anything we stock, other than advanced fingerling channel catfish (>9 inches) will be eaten by bass. These larger fingerlings are expensive and hard to get, so any stocking would have to be strongly justified. A lake the size of Fayette County would take a large number of them. My guess is our own staff would have a hard time accepting this recommendation. Most of the time channel catfish do well or they don't. The high density of bass and relatively clear water in the reservoir has a lot to do with the channel catfish population. Most of the spawn is probably eaten by bass, so only a few get through to adult size. We'll continue to monitor the catfish population and will make some recommendations if the situation gets worse. I have attached our latest fisheries management report which has the channel catfish data through 2008. If you have any questions please call us."

I have made it easy for you to read the surveys, even posted the TP&W remarks for you to see, you even posted a link that confirms what I am saying and you are still too stupid to see the truth. I could post the PM's between myself and Weldon Kirk on this very subject, but I don't think you could understand the facts. The facts are there, you just need to smarten up and read them.

So are there no crappie in the lake? I just asked a simple question and did not mean to cause such a discussion.

Yep, definitely liberal :-) So are there no crappie in the lake? I just asked a simple question and did not mean to cause such a discussion. Yes, there are few crappies in the lake. Probably very few.
