Looks like I'm getting drug along for a wedding there in May and hope to do a little fishing. I plan on strapping the kayak to my 4 runner and would like to fish the Ouachita or a nearby stream particularially for crappie or smallies. Never fished for small mouth, heck at this point I'd even be happy with a gool little bream hole. Does anyone know the area. Just looking to get out for a few hours and get away from the extended family and hopefully catch some fish.

Thanks in advance thumb

I sort of know the area as I lived in the NE corner of the state fo 23 years. Lake DeGray is close but don't know about the kayak thing there. They do catch some good bream from it, and they should be biting in May in that lake. Arkansas lakes get ready for bream sooner than some Texas lakes for some reason.

We have a log cabin about 15 miles from Arkadelphia. If you take Highway 67 from the north end of town to the northeast toward Donaldson and go about 5-6 miles you will cross the Ouachita and there is good access (parking and a ramp) in the northeast side of the bridge. I have caught a lot of bream in that river.

Thank you!

It looks like we are actually going to be staying at the Degray lodge. Any tips for fishing Degray?

Caddo river is beautiful and runs into the ouchita in town. Several access points below the Degray dam. You can access those areas west of highway 7 north of town. Lots of fish below the dam and unless they are releasing heavy it's like a narrow lake. Love that area. If you have time go to Hot Springs and have a drink in the Arlington Hotel bar. My sainted Grandmother used to sip drinks with Elenor Roosevelt there when FDR was in town getting treatment in the spas.

Lake DeGray if you want crappie.
Get on Google maps and find
Arlie Moore Rd just NW of the lodge.
At the end of the road, there are 2 launches.
Use the north launch. Head north
and fish the coves on your right.
Most have brush piles. Have done really well
there over the years.Especially around the
Boy Scout camp. Look for Boy Scout Rd on maps.
Fish finder will, of course, help find the
brush. Don't be surprised when the bass start
nailing your crappie jigs. Caught more BIG bass
there on small jigs than anywhere else. Be sure
to step up your line. Not the place for 4#.

Thank you! I appreciate that big time. Screenshotting your post just incase I can't find this thread later. I just put a fish finder on my kayak so should be able to find the brush piles.

Thank you thumb

kdub#1 Start by looking at Lake DeGray in Google Earth. You will be looking at the arm of the lake that heads due north.
Zoom in until you see Arlie Moore and Boy Scout Camp Rd. Remember launch from the north ramp, not the one on Arlie Moore Rd.
I would concentrate my efforts on the 2nd and 3rd main coves on the right or east side. Zoom in and look at the two coves and notice
standing timber just as you enter these coves. On the bottom right of Earth you will see the pics were taken in November and
the lake levels at that time were around 10 feet low. So the timber you see on Google earth will be covered up. Second place to
go is the Navionics Web app. http://www.navionics.com/en/us-campaign When you open it up just click where it says enjoy your charts.
Study the same areas. You will see some brush piles marked on the chart. They are pretty accurate. I always fished these areas starting
in the deepest water with timber or brush and worked my way shallow. You will find them pretty quick. The fish finder will help for sure.
If you are marking fish right on the bottom in the timber they are usually cats or gar. Don't be surprised if you find the craps in water
25' all the way to the shallowest of brush. It happens all the time there, even in the hot months. If you have any questions let me know.

I fished Degray back a few years ago and it was a lot of fun. I fished it in October one year for a regional event, but caught tons of fish. The water was up when i was there but we caught them good throwing a swimbait over points early and then flipping bushes once the sun came up. Just check some of the points, on your Navionics app or webapp for the shallow points with channel swings... we launched in the marina by the dam and all those points when you hit main lake from the dam on the left were good. Had a few willow tree island right there too if I remember correctly. Good luck!!!
